Chapter 231

A massive glowing silver wolf stood in front of me, lips drawn back to reveal black gums and shining ivory fangs. I had never seen a she-wolf this large. She was almost as big as my own wolf! I could do nothing but stare as she faced me down with arrogant, savage beauty.
‘She is ours,’ came the rumble of my wolf in my mind, ‘This is our true mate. There is none like her.’
I didn’t need to question what he was saying, I could feel the truth of what he said in my very soul, as though there were a tether drawn tight between our two souls, pulling me towards the angry, silver wolf
in front of me.
“Avery,” I held out my hands placatingly, my heart racing. I needed to resolve this misunderstanding between us. I couldn’t let this end like this.
Her wolf snapped at my hands, leaping away. I didn’t flinch, but slowly walked after her. Her anger was palpable, rolling off of her in waves. She was so powerful and vengeful.
She was so beautiful.
To think that I had marked a wolf such as she. It had been unfair, I knew, but I could not express regret for it. Not for claiming her.
She would be mine, no matter what I had to do. I would possess her body and soul.
‘We will take her back,’ I told my wolf in my head, grim with resolve.
‘Good luck,’ he said, and I got the impression he was laughing at me beneath his wry tone.
‘Don’t patronize me,’ I grumbled, ‘You’re the one who got me into this mess.’
‘I look forward to seeing my mate prove how worthy she is,’ he said, with smug satisfaction, staring through my eyes at Avery’s wolf approvingly.
‘Have at it, then,’ I thought, and shifted, letting my wolf take over my body.
My wolf stood under the moonlight, but the stars and the great orb of the moon cast no light on his inky black coat. We were the deep velvet of midnight, absorbing all light and never letting it go. Our power shone forth from our fiery eyes as we padded towards our mate.
Avery’s wolf swiveled her head to regard us, her metallic coat shimmering as she moved. The tether of the soul bond between these two mates was visible to wolven senses, a shimmering ethereal rope that
stretched from our heart to the mark on her neck.
Had she marked us in return, there would be a second bond running back, but for now it went undrawn. We were mismatched until she marked us in return.
My wolf pawed the ground and tossed his head, proud at being admired by his mate and ready to prove himself once and for all as being worthy.

But then a foul scent drifted past on the breeze.
Intruders.
Avery’s wolf threw up her head and howled. The cry was primal and powerful. It told every predator for miles around that we were here, and we were ready for a fight.
Then she turned and fled, with an impudent swish of her tail she darted off, knowing that would leave us behind to confront the rogue wolves we could now hear slinking through the underbrush towards our position.
My wolf howled in return, venting his irritation at this slight, and his intention to destroy any who dared try to get between him and his mate. We would obliterate these creeping dogs and send them to meet their mothers in the dirt below and the stars above.
