Chapter 109
“Are things not going well with the new husband?” She asked curiously.
I sighed inwardly and braced myself to answer her curious questions. “Not really. We had a… disagreement.”
Sofia nodded in understanding. “Men are so much work, I find I don’t have time for them often, myself.”
“Please.” I pleaded, “I just need to talk to my mother and then we can get going.”
Sofia stirred her tea with a spoon slowly, “Well, my dear, I would love to help, but you see, your mother isn’t here.”
I gaped at her, “What do you mean? She left immediately following the wedding.”
“I’m sure she did, as she did stop by here briefly. Then she received a message and packed and left. She said she had been summoned back to Silvermoon, and that it had something to do with you. I assumed you were the one who called her?”
My heart was racing, “I was not.”
“Oh,” Sofia frowned, “Oh dear. Well, that does complicate things.”
I rose from the table in haste. “Thank you for the tea, but if my mother has gone back to Silvermoon Pack, I need to go find her.”
“Of course, of course.” Sofia smiled and walked me to the door. As I stepped through, I turned to ask her one more question.
“Did you see who brought her the message?”.
“Oh, there’s not much that goes on around here that I don’t see!” Sofia laughed. “It was a young woman, maybe a little younger than you. In fact, you look a bit alike, now that I think about it.”
Zara. It had to be.
I thanked Sofia and climbed back into the SUV. For a moment, I sat, thinking. If Zara had collected my mother, then I had to go find her immediately. It had become clear that my mother was no longer safe in Zara’s hands.
I was surprised she had gone with her, but I was well acquainted with Zara’s ability to lie about anything. Knowing my mother, she only had to say that she was taking her to me, that I needed her, and my mother would have gone.
Cursing into the night, I tore out of the driveway and turned my headlights towards the road that ran into Silvermoon territory.
As the trees whipped by, I just hoped that I wasn’t too late to catch them, but I passed no

other vehicles on the road. Nor any cars coming from Nightwolf. I guess Gideon wasn’t interested in bringing me back.

I parked in the darkness outside the Silvermoon pack house. Nostalgia reminded me of the other times Ryan and I had come here after hours to hang out. Those times were gone now.
I pushed open the large wooden door and looked around the empty foyer. There was a light on in a room at the far end of the pack offices. I headed that way on instinct.
When I looked inside the room, I saw Zara, sitting in a tall-backed chair in front of a fire. She turned with a wide smile as I stepped inside..
“Hello, sister,” She said with a sneer, “So nice of you to join us.”
“I’m here for my mother.” I said angrily, “You had no right to take her.”
“Oh silly, Avery. Always going on about what’s allowed.” Zara laughed with a shake of her head, “When will you learn?”
