Chapter 110
Avery’s POV
“You!” I stared, shocked at the man from my dream about being tangled in vines. I could still viscerally remember the feeling of his lips on mine as he’d stolen that kiss and left me to struggle.
My eyes darted from him to the door behind him. As I watched, the one-eyed man reached down and turned the bolt in the lock. My heart raced.
I had thought I would go to Silvermoon, confront Zara, find my mother and leave. Now it appeared that was going to be more difficult than I first imagined.
“What have you done with my mother?” I demanded, whirling back to face Zara. With the fire behind her, her face was sinisterly backlit, with only her red lips gleaming from the shadows.
“Don’t worry your empty little head about that.” Zara shrugged, “So long as you behave, your mother will be fine.”
Behave? What did they have in mind?
On instinct I hugged my arms around myself. I already knew how cruel Zara could be, and I didn’t know this other guy at all. The way he moved was predatory, and I already knew from our shared dream that he didn’t give a crap about respecting personal boundaries.
I heard the man take a step closer and whirled to face him.
“S-stay over there.” I commanded, “Who are you, anyways?”
The man smiled that mirthless smile again. I could see the skin under his eye patch wrinkling as he grinned.
“You can call me the Rogue King.” He gave a sketchy bow.
The Rogue KING? Had I heard correctly? I gaped at him.
“You control… all the rogues who have been attacking?” I stammered. To think that Gideon had been trying to stomp out the various rogue incursions that had been popping up across Nightwolf territory, and this man… had been coordinating it all?
“That’s right.” the Rogue King paced closer, ignoring my invective to stay back. “You’ve already seen that the packs are helpless to protect their own territory, yes?”
I stared at him, wide-eyed, as I remembered more about what had been happening. This man had been kidnapping women and girls!
“Pack hierarchy is useless against those who are determined to build a better world.”
“A… b-better world?” I blurted out, confused, “What do you mean?”

“Think about it.” The Rogue King moved closer again, pulling an armchair closer to the fire and gesturing to me to sit in it. I didn’t move.
“Can you genuinely think of a time when pack lealership made your life better?” He tilted his head at me, “Most Alphas and Lunas only care about securing their own power and right to rule. Take your Gideon for example. He doesn’t actually care about YOU, does he?”
The barb was simple, and it had an impact. I looked away quickly to try and hide the expression on my face. My mouth twisted bitterly.
It was true, based on his recent actions alone, Gideon didn’t truly care about me as a person. He only wanted me to secure his title as Alpha!
The Rogue King moved to observe my expression, then reached out and gently lifted my chin. When he spoke, false sympathy streaked through his words.
“Ah, I see you know all too well what I mean. They use others, and throw them away like they are disposable.”
Tears burned in the corners of my eyes, “What do you want?” I whispered.
“I want to tear it all down.” The Rogue King’s voice grew strident, and he pushed me backwards until I fell into the armchair he’d pulled up. “And you will be my secret weapon to do so.”
“Why would you think I would help you?” I asked, incredulously, “My life may not have been easy in the pack,” my eyes darted to Zara who ignored my pointed glare and examined her nails, “but tearing it down would just mean there are more wolves out in the wilds, helpless!”
“Isn’t that how wolves were created to live? In the wild?” The Rogue King leaned on the arms of my chair, his face close to mine, “The packs restrict us, keep us weak. They tell us theirs is the only way because that’s what suits them. Without our strength, they are nothing, and you, my lovely Avery, are so strong.”
“I am?” I squeaked, confused again, “Why me?”
“You are the Moon Goddess Heir.” The Rogue King said with satisfaction, “You are the key to overturning the werewolf packs, once you bear me an heir.”
I leaned back away from him at that, “Mate with you?” I said, shocked, “I don’t even know you!”
“It won’t matter once you’re in your mating heat” he laughed, “Though I do hope that you will come to know me better, in time.”
“I refuse.”
I tried to rise from the chair, but the Rogue King grabbed my shoulders and whirled me around. I felt a sharp jab in my neck and saw the one-eyed rogue’s hand come away holding a syringe.

“I’m afraid that’s not an option.” He hissed in my ear, then released me. I stumbled back, holding my hand to my neck. My fingers came away with a tiny bit of blood.
“What did you inject me with?” I demanded, furious.
“Oh, just a little something I came up with in the woods.” The Rogue King grinned that nasty grin and reached for me. I tried to backpedal but my movements felt uncoordinated and weak.
Whatever he had injected me with was working quickly.
My spine straightened as I felt that rush come over me that I had felt when I was in the woods on the Full Mating Moon. That delicious heat that started in my core and swept down my limbs like hot honey.
I groaned through gritted teeth.
“Don’t fight it.” Zara hissed, rising from her chair and coming closer, “You should be grateful. Do you think that Gideon wouldn’t do the same if he knew what you were? I didn’t want to believe it- who knows what the Moon Goddess sees in you.” Jealousy contorted her face into an ugly mask that swam before my eyes in wavering lines.
“Get away from me.” I moaned, even as I fell to my knees. My neck was growing hot. My fingers slid to the mark on my neck. It felt like it was burning.
Both the Rogue King and Zara were staring at the mark on my neck.
