Lilly stood in front of the JY Tech building, taking in the sleek lines and the way the tower seemed to touch the sky. It was her first time here, her first time seeing where Jason worked. Right now, he was the only person she could turn to, the only one she wanted to lean on.
She hurried inside, her steps quick and a little shaky. The receptionist looked up as she approached. “Hi, who are you here to see?”
“Hello, is Mr. Farill in? I’m here to see him.”
“Our CEO? Do you have an appointment?” The receptionist’s tone was polite but firm. “You need to schedule in advance to meet with him.”
Lilly hesitated, her confidence faltering. “I don’t have an appointment.”
“Sorry, then. I can’t let you see him.”
Lilly tried to stay calm. “I’ll call him, then.” She pulled out her phone and dialed Jason’s number. The ringtone played, echoing in her ear, but no one answered. She frowned, tried again, and then once more. Each time, it just rang and rang.
Why wasn’t he picking up? Was he busy, or… avoiding her?
She pressed her lips together, refusing to give up. Turning back to the receptionist, she tried again. “Please, I really do know Mr. Farill. I’m a friend. His phone isn’t going through right now, but could you let him know I’m here? I’m sure he’ll want to see me.”
The receptionist shook her head, her voice a little tired. “I’m sorry, miss. Every day, people come in asking to see Mr. Farill, and a lot of them say the same thing. We just can’t let anyone through without an appointment.”
“I’m not lying. I really do know him.”
Before the receptionist could answer, someone spoke from behind. “What’s going on here?”
Lilly turned and immediately recognized the girl standing there. It was Hanna. She and Hanna had never spoken. However, some things, especially between women, just stuck in your memory.
Lilly felt her hope crumble, cold and heavy in her chest. She’d almost forgotten Jason wasn’t alone anymore.
“Do you understand what I’m saying, Lilly?” Hanna’s voice was soft, but there was steel behind it.
Lilly took a breath. “If you have something to say, just say it. There’s nobody else here.”
Hanna nodded. “Alright, I’ll be honest. I’ve been with Jason these last three years. I don’t want anyone coming between us, so I hope you’ll stop trying to see him. Let us be.”
She paused, letting her words hang in the air. “And honestly, Jason probably doesn’t want to see you either. You seem like someone with self-respect. You wouldn’t want to chase after someone else’s boyfriend and make things awkward, right?”
Lilly felt the blood drain from her face. She looked at Hanna, her voice barely above a whisper. “I understand. I hope you and Mr. Farill are happy.”
