Lilly almost spit out her soup. “Mom, what are you even talking about? I don’t have feelings for him.”
“Lilly, you’re not getting any younger. I know you used to be hung up on Jason, but he’s moved on. It’s time for you to start your own new chapter. I was just chatting with Miranda, and she hinted at the idea of bringing our families together. She really likes you, and your dad and I both think Roger is a wonderful guy.”
In their circle, Roger was known for his brains and good character. Everyone, including May and Mr. Lynch, thought highly of him.
“Mom, I’m really not thinking about that right now,” Lilly replied.
“Well, you should start thinking about it. Don’t be so stubborn, Lilly. Don’t waste your youth. Your dad and I just want you to find someone who loves you and will be there for you,” May said, her voice gentle but firm.
Lilly didn’t want her parents to worry, so she just nodded. “I know, Mom. Just give me a little time, okay?”
May filled another bowl of soup for her. “Eat up. You’ve gotten skinnier lately.”
Later, Lilly went to the bathroom. She stood at the sink, splashing cold water on her face. She felt weighed down and just wanted to go home and crawl into bed.
As she walked down the hallway, her phone chimed. It was a message from Victoria.
The second she saw Victoria’s name, her mood brightened. Victoria wrote, “Lilly, I’m coming home in a couple days.”
Lilly couldn’t help but smile. “Really? I’ll have the kitchen make all your favorite dishes. Come home soon.”
She wanted to tell Victoria about Jason, but figured this wasn’t a conversation for texts. Instead, she sent another message. “Victoria, when you get back, I have some really good news for you.”
Victoria replied, “Okay, Lilly. I miss you.”
A soft smile played on Lilly’s lips. She was so busy texting that she didn’t notice where she was going, and suddenly she walked straight into someone. Her head hit a solid, warm chest.
