Moss and Joanna finally relaxed. “Thank you,” Joanna said.
After the doctor left, they sat quietly on the edge of Ella’s bed, watching her sleep. She looked so peaceful, but her exhaustion was obvious.
Joanna reached out, softly brushing Ella’s cheek. “She spent two hours giving me acupuncture. She only passed out because she was trying to help me. We barely knew each other, but she’s been so good to me. I don’t even know how to thank her.”
“She’ll be alright,” Moss assured her gently.
“Moss, I don’t know why, but I feel so close to Ella. Like I’ve known her forever. I just want to be near her,” Joanna admitted.
Moss nodded. He felt it too.
Joanna’s thoughts drifted to Jessa. “Our daughter Jessa went off with Louise. That woman is just using her to get at us. It hurts so much to see Jessa so stubborn and lost. If only she could be more like Ella.”
Moss had seen Jessa’s true colors long before Joanna had. He knew how cunning and calculating she could be. But Jessa was their only daughter, and no matter what, he couldn’t let go of his hope for her. This time though, she had crossed a line by teaming up with Louise.
He could see how deeply Joanna was hurting. She’d almost died bringing Jessa into the world.
Moss wrapped his arm around Joanna’s shoulders and gave her a comforting squeeze. “Joanna, maybe that the way it is.”
Joanna glanced at Ella, then turned to Moss. “Moss, what if we asked Ella to be our stepdaughter?”
“Our stepdaughter?” Moss repeated, considering it.
“Yes. I really like her. I heard she doesn’t have parents. We could be there for her, give her the family she’s missing, and love her like our own.”
Moss nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Alright.”
Just then, Ella’s eyelashes fluttered and she slowly opened her eyes.
