He told her to go on ahead by herself.
Jessa hesitated. She had been hoping David would come pick her up. That was what made a date feel special, like a real occasion.
“David, can’t you come get me? I...” she started.
David shut her down before she could finish. “Jessa, I already had someone book us a table at the steakhouse. I’ve got a big meeting to handle, so just go straight there. Be good, okay?”
The way he said those last words, so confident and commanding, sent a thrill through her. Jessa had always been drawn to powerful men. She agreed right away. “Alright, David. I’ll head over. Don’t keep me waiting too long.”
“I won’t.”
Jessa got ready and had her driver drop her at the steakhouse.
A waiter met her at the door, all smiles. “Miss Wade, welcome. Your table is ready. Please come with me.”
He led her to a private table by the window, where the view was beautiful. Jessa couldn’t help but smile. This was exactly the kind of place she liked.
“Miss Wade, can I get you something to drink?”
“Just a coffee for now,” Jessa replied. “I’ll wait for David before we order anything else.”
“Of course. I hope you and Mr. Harmon have a wonderful evening together,” the waiter added with a wink.
Jessa was in a great mood. When her coffee arrived, she sipped it slowly, feeling like everything was just right.
That’s when she heard a familiar voice. It was Lilly. She had just walked in and spotted Jessa right away. “Jessa, it’s you.”
