“This is…”
“Alright, Mom, Dad, I’m exhausted. I’m heading to bed. If I want to look amazing for my date with David tomorrow, I need a good night’s sleep.”
Jessa slipped away to her room.
Joanna frowned, her worry showing. “What is David even thinking? He just came here to break off the engagement, then immediately starts hanging out with Jessa again. What is he up to?”
Moss shook his head. “I’m calling him.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed. The ringtone played for a few moments before the call connected. David’s voice came through, smooth and deep. “Hello, Uncle Moss.”
“David,” Moss said, his tone icy, “I need to know what’s really going on.”
“I’m not sure what you mean, Uncle Moss.”
“Jessa just got home. She said you’re taking her out to dinner tomorrow.”
“That’s right.”
“David, you came to our house to break things off, said you wanted to be with Ella. We respected your decision. But now you’re back to spending time with Jessa. You’re caught between two girls, making things messy for everyone. What do you want from all this? Is this fair to Ella?”
Joanna jumped in, her voice sharp. “Mr. Harmon, Ella is a wonderful girl. If you care about her, you should give her your whole heart. Don’t mess with Jessa anymore. This isn’t good for any of you.”
David listened quietly. After a moment, he finally spoke. “Uncle Moss, do you really know what kind of person Louise is?”
Moss hesitated. “Why are you bringing up Louise?”
“There’s a lot you don’t know, Uncle Moss. It’s not something I can explain over the phone. I have my reasons for doing things this way. If you come by tomorrow, you’ll understand.”
And with that, David ended the call.
