Jessa hurried after her mom. "Mom, I swear, I had no idea Dad and Louise were... together. I’m so sorry. You weren’t supposed to see that."
Joanna’s whole body felt numb and cold. She looked at Jessa and tried to steady her voice. "It’s alright, Jessa. This isn’t your fault. Honestly, it’s not even a surprise. Louise has been living here for years. Your dad must have been with her for a while now."
Joanna had always suspected that something was going on between Moss and Louise, but seeing it for herself was a whole different level of pain. It still hit her like a punch to the gut.
"Mom..." Jessa’s voice was shaky.
"Jessa, I need to go home," Joanna said quietly. She just wanted to get as far away from this place as possible. It made her feel sick to her stomach.
Jessa watched her mother walk away, a small smile curving her lips. Joanna and Ella showing up tonight was unexpected, but honestly, it was the best thing that could have happened. Everything was falling into place.
Back at the door, Ella was watching Moss and Louise tangled up on the bed. She raised her eyebrows, then pushed the door open and walked straight in. "Mr. Wade!"
Jessa heard Ella’s voice and froze. She spun around and saw Ella barging right into Moss’s bedroom. Was Ella out of her mind?
Jessa rushed after her. "Ella, what are you doing? This is the Wade family’s house! It’s bad enough you showed up uninvited, but you can’t just storm into my father’s bedroom. Get out, now!"
Jessa tried to shove Ella back out, but Ella slipped past her and walked right up to the bed, calling out again, even louder. "Mr. Wade!"
Louise, half-covered on the bed, stared at Ella like she’d lost it. Was this girl for real?
Moss was still dazed from whatever he’d taken, barely catching Ella’s first shout. But the second call, right next to him, finally snapped him out of it. He looked up and saw Ella’s calm face. Her eyes were steady and unflinching, watching him and Louise without a hint of embarrassment.
It felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over his head. Suddenly, he snapped out of his haze. "Ella, what are you doing here?"
Ella glanced at Louise, then looked straight at Moss. "Mr. Wade, are you sure you want to talk to me like that right now?"
