The DNA test confirmed it. Jessa really was Moss and Joanna’s biological daughter.
Joanna was shocked. Deep down, she’d always felt that Jessa wasn’t her child. Maybe it was just some weird mother’s intuition. But now the proof was right there, impossible to ignore. Science didn’t lie. Jessa was her daughter.
Jessa looked at her parents and frowned. “Mom, Dad, what are you guys up to?”
Moss quickly tucked the DNA report away. Now that they knew the truth, there was no way they could let Jessa find out they’d doubted her. “Just going through some paperwork,” he said, trying to sound casual.
Jessa nodded, then moved closer, linking her arm through Joanna’s. She put on her sweetest voice. “Mom, your assistant tried to keep me out. Seriously, do I need special permission just to see my own mom?”
Joanna turned to her male assistant. “Next time Jessa comes, just let her in. No need to stop her.”
“Yes, ma’am.” The assistant nodded quickly.
Jessa’s smile returned. “So, Mom, you remember what we talked about yesterday, right? I’m here to start work. Where are you putting me?”
Joanna gave her a gentle look. “Jessa, how about you start as an intern in the marketing department for a while? Get some real experience.”
Jessa stared at her. Was this a joke?
An internship in marketing? Just a regular employee?
She felt let down, almost betrayed. She’d pictured Joanna handing her one of the company’s top luxury jewelry brands. She wanted to walk in as the new queen, not some intern.
“Mom, you seriously want me to work in marketing? I don’t want to do it.”
“Where do you want to go then?”
“I want to run the jewelry brand under Johnson Group.”
