Moss held his phone tightly. “Jessa’s at home. I’ll reserve a private room at the Golden Spoon for lunch. You can meet her there.”

He didn’t waste any time making the plans.

Joanna agreed right away. “Okay. See you at noon.”

Suddenly, Moss heard a young man’s voice on Joanna’s end. “Where are we going now?”

Moss’s eyebrows drew together. “Joanna…”

Before he could say another word, the call ended with a click. Joanna had hung up on him.

It was clear that unless it was about their daughter, Joanna didn’t want to speak to him at all.

Moss just stood there, silent and frustrated.

Louise noticed the stormy look on his face and easily guessed the call was from Joanna. No one else in the world could get under Moss’s skin like she did.

She walked over and asked quietly, “Moss, was that Joanna?”

Jessa felt her heart skip. “Dad, did Mom call?”

Moss nodded. “Yeah. She’s back in the country. I set up lunch at the Golden Spoon so you two can see each other.”

Joanna was back sooner than Jessa had expected. The thought made her nervous, but then she realized this could actually work in her favor.

Moss hadn’t caught on that she wasn’t really his daughter. Joanna probably wouldn’t notice either. With a second parent doting on her, life could only get better.

“Dad, now that Mom’s back, I’m totally going to tell her how you’ve been treating me!”
