Ella turned her head and spotted a lady in a dress. Her name was Louise. She was in her forties but had that gentle, delicate beauty you’d expect from someone raised in the south. She looked like she barely aged at all.
Ella had never seen Moss with a woman before. She’d only heard that he and his first wife had split up years ago.
She glanced at Louise, then asked, “Mr. Wade, who is this? How should I address her?”
Moss gave Louise a quick look. “Ms. Irvine, just call her Louise. That’s what everyone here does.”
Ella noticed something in Louise’s eyes when Moss said her name. It was a flicker of disappointment, gone almost as soon as it appeared.
Louise smiled. “Hello, Ms. Irvine.”
“Hi, Louise.”
Louise turned to Moss. “Moss, why were you gone so long this time?”
Moss pressed his lips together for a moment. “I found Jessa’s mother.”
Wait. What?
Ella froze, stunned. She’d heard Jessa’s mom had died. Now, all of a sudden, she was alive?
Louise’s expression changed completely. “Moss, you mean Joanna isn’t dead?”
“She’s not,” Moss said. “She’s been in a coma all these years, but she finally woke up. I’ve already told her about Jessa. She’ll be coming back soon to see her daughter.”
Louise’s face got complicated, like she was trying to sort out how she felt. After a pause, she said, “Moss, back then Joanna misunderstood what was going on between us. When she comes back, you should explain everything. Maybe you two have a second chance.”
Moss’s voice was ice cold. “She wanted the divorce. She chose to leave. There’s no way it’s happening.”
He walked away without another word.
