The shower was running in the bathroom. Ella was already inside.
David stood by the window and pushed it open, letting the cool night air drift in. It felt good against his skin, chasing away the restless heat that clung to him.
All he had to do was think about Ella, about the way her body looked now, a little softer, a little more mature, and his blood started to boil. He couldn’t help it. The memories from three years ago, tangled up together in the dark, came rushing back so fast it was like he was living them all over again.
He missed her. God, he missed her.
The water stopped. David closed the window just as the bathroom door creaked open and Ella stepped out.
Her nightgown was unwearable, so she’d found one of his white dress shirts in the cabinet. It was way too big for her, hanging loose on her small frame and barely covering her thighs. Her legs were bare, long and smooth. She wore plain white slippers, and her dark hair was wet, falling over her shoulders. She looked fresh and sweet, like a peach you wanted to sink your teeth into.
David couldn’t help staring. Ella noticed and shot him a look, her eyes sharp. “What are you staring at? Keep looking and I’ll poke your eyes out.”
He grinned. “Why are you so fierce tonight?”
She huffed. “Just making sure you know. I’m sleeping on the sofa tonight.”
The suite had a bed and a sofa, and the sofa was soft and wide enough for anyone to sleep on comfortably.
Ella headed over, plopped down, and stretched out. “You take the bed.”
David walked over and stood beside her. “Get on the bed. I’ll take the sofa.”
Ella shook her head. “No, this is your place. Thanks for letting me stay, but I’ll take the sofa. You should sleep in your own bed.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Do you really think I’d let a woman sleep on the sofa?”
Without waiting for her reply, David just reached down and scooped her up.
Ella was suddenly in his arms, her legs swinging as she squirmed. “Mr. Harmon, put me down!”
He carried her over and set her gently on the bed. “Be good. You’re sleeping here.”
