David looked at Jessa, his eyes searching hers. “Do you really mean that?”
He let out a short, bitter laugh. “I wish you were telling the truth.”
Jessa’s breath caught. “You…”
“Jessa, Ella doesn’t have to fight for me. I already belong to her. I’m not going to marry you, so please, stop wasting your time.”
Without waiting for a response, David turned and walked away.
His words hit Jessa like a slap. Why? What was it about Ella that she didn’t have? What made her so much better?
…
David walked out of the Emerald Banquet and spotted Aiden nearby. “Where did Ella go?”
Aiden answered quickly, “Ms. Irvine went back to her room, sir.”
“I’m going to see her.”
Just then, Wyatt showed up with Lola in his arms, looking for Ella too. Wyatt smiled down at Lola, gently squeezing her soft, round cheeks. “Lola, are you excited to see your mommy?”
Lola nodded, her eyes shining. “Yes!”
“We’ll see her really soon,” Wyatt promised.
Right then, Wyatt noticed David up ahead.
Lola saw him too and her whole face brightened. “Papa Wyatt, look, it’s that guy!”
David was walking down the hallway, tall and confident, impossible not to notice.
Wyatt couldn’t help but think how strange and lucky it was to bump into David again. First in Country F, and now here in the Capital.
“Papa Wyatt, can you put me down? I want to go say hi to the handsome uncle.”
“Sure, go ahead.”
Wyatt set her on the floor.
Lola darted toward David, calling out in her sweet, high voice, “Hi!”
