Three years later.
Country F.
Sunlight poured into the spacious villa, spilling warmth across the room. Ella lay snuggled in bed, her long lashes brushing her cheeks, her face still soft and rosy from sleep. She looked so sweet and peaceful, you’d almost want to pinch her cheeks.
The golden curtains shimmered where they pooled on the floor, glowing in the morning light.
Suddenly, the door creaked open. A bundle of energy burst in and scrambled onto the bed. Little Lola pressed her face to Ella’s and planted a big, noisy kiss right on her cheek. Her voice was bright and sugary. “Ding dong, ding dong. Lola’s official wake-up kiss service has begun. Mommy, time to get up!”
Lola was three now. Three years ago, Ella had come back to Country F and given birth to her daughter.
Lola wore a pink princess dress, her features delicate and almost doll-like. Her big, sparkling eyes were filled with mischief and curiosity, a perfect blend of her mom and dad.
Ella opened her eyes slowly, a soft smile spreading across her face. The best thing about being a mom was that, every morning, she got to wake up to Lola’s sweet little face. She pulled her daughter in for a hug. “Lola, Mommy had a surgery late last night, so I’m a little tired this morning.”
Lola’s eyes twinkled. “I know. That’s why I played by myself after I woke up, so you could sleep a bit more. But Papa Wyatt is here. He wants to see you.”
Ella’s heart felt full. Lola really was her little angel.
Wyatt was here? That was unusual. He almost never dropped by unless it was something important.
Ella sat up. “Alright, let’s go see Papa Wyatt.”
She took Lola’s hand, and together they walked out to the living room. Wyatt was standing there, waiting. “Ella, did I wake you?”
Ella smiled at him. “Wyatt, is something wrong?”
Wyatt met her eyes. “Ella, I just got back from the Capital. Aren’t you curious about what’s happened over there these last three years?”
Ella glanced down at Lola, who was peering up at her with wide, expectant eyes.
Ella stroked her daughter’s hair. “Lola, go play in your room, okay?”
