The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 479

Eldervale, hospital.

Catherine slid off the exam table, trying to ignore the stiffness in her back. “Harrell, still not a single sign I’m going into labor?”

Harrell pulled down his mask and shot her a reassuring look. “Nope, nothing yet. But don’t worry, you’re in great shape. We can wait. Your due date isn’t for another three days anyway.”

Three days sounded short, but the wait already felt endless. The suspense was the hardest part. Catherine tried not to fidget with her hospital gown.

Out of nowhere, Harrell glanced up. “Catherine, did you know Lance is getting married tomorrow?”

His hands slipped into his lab coat pockets as he studied her face. The whole town had been buzzing about Lance’s wedding — of course she’d heard. Still, Harrell just left it hanging in the air.

Not sure what he was really asking, Catherine kept her gaze down, lashes fluttering as she forced her voice to sound light. “Yeah, I know. Aren’t you going back for the ceremony, Harrell?”

He gave a small shake of his head. “No. Lance said I should stay here. He’s worried about you...“

He never finished. The office door swung open with a bang.

Sally barged in, practically throwing her thick stack of prenatal records in Harrell’s direction. “Admit me. I want you to do my C-section yourself.”

She let go of the file before Harrell even had a grip, so he lunged and barely caught it. Then he dropped it to his side, clearly annoyed.

“Sally, I’ve got a few things to wrap up first. Just wait here for a bit.” He turned to Catherine, his tone softening. “Catherine, don’t go anywhere. I’ll grab your blood test results.”

With that, Harrell left, and the pile of records tumbled to the floor, scattering papers all over. One sheet slid right up to Catherine’s foot.

Sally glared after Harrell as he disappeared, then turned on Catherine, noticing the paper underneath her shoe. Her frustration exploded. “Do you even look where you’re standing? That’s my medical record! Are you blind?”

The sudden shove knocked Catherine off balance. She instinctively hugged her stomach, steadying herself before fixing Sally with a frosty stare.

Sally’s belly jutted out so far she looked ready to pop at any second. Arguing with her felt pointless, pregnant or not.

Without a word, Catherine turned to leave, but Sally stepped in her way.

“Catherine, while you’re in here giving birth, Lance will be out there marrying someone else. Does this kid of yours even matter? He never loved you, you know.”

Sally’s sneer was unmistakable.

Catherine brushed Sally’s hand off, her voice calm. “That’s not a surprise. But Sally, you’re the one about to have a baby. Where’s Lemuel? I don’t see him holding your hand today.”

The color drained from Sally’s face. The jab had landed.
