“You’re asking me?” Lance looked at him, his tone flat.
Aaron didn’t say a word. The Lee family’s attitude toward Catherine was weird, no doubt about it. But even if he wanted to investigate, he needed a place to start. Without a direction, he’d just be running in circles.
“Check out every possibility you can think of.”
Lance barely moved his lips, but just like that, Aaron was stuck with a mountain of work. He almost wanted to beg for a break, but swallowed it down. Complaining wouldn’t change anything. Lance didn’t care if he worked himself to the bone, he only cared about results.
“Yes, sir.”
A knock sounded at the office door. Lance ended the call and said quietly, “Come in.”
Letty walked in, her face tense and worried. “Lance, Belinda is here.”
“Who?” Lance frowned, turning in his chair.
“Belinda,” Letty repeated.
She had barely finished speaking when Belinda pushed the door open fully and strode inside.
“What’s wrong? Your mom shows up and you’re not even a little happy?”
Lance gave Letty a look. She got the message and slipped out of the room.
“You could’ve given me a heads up,” he said.
Belinda stood in the middle of the office, glancing around. “I wanted to drop in and see if you were up to anything shady.”
Lance’s eyes flickered as he sat down. “What could I possibly be doing?”
“If you’re not up to anything, then why are you still hanging around in Eldervale?” Belinda sat across from him. “Sarah and I have practically finished sorting out the wedding. And here you are, hiding out. I heard Adelina came to visit and you didn’t even sit down for a proper meal with her. What’s going on?”
“Work’s busy,” Lance replied, his answer short and to the point.
Lorinda had offered to take Amanda out for dinner, and Amanda picked the spot herself. Catherine and Lorinda didn’t realize until they pulled up that this place charged four figures a head. They were both ready to turn around, but as soon as they got out of the car, they spotted Amanda waving to them from a window seat.
“Catherine, Lorinda!”
The restaurant was quiet, and everyone turned to look. Catherine and Lorinda had no choice but to head inside, keeping their voices low as they greeted her. “Amanda.”
“You two look like you’re living the good life here in Eldervale,” Amanda said, her eyes lighting up as she took in their polished outfits.
Catherine got straight to the point. “What brings you to Eldervale? Is someone taking care of the orphanage?”
Amanda’s smile faded a little. “You might not know this, but I’m actually from Eldervale.”
That caught both Catherine and Lorinda off guard.
“I had some things to handle here, and since I knew you were around, I thought I’d drop by.” Amanda’s eyes flicked between them as she asked, almost testing the waters, “Have you two heard of the Lee family?”
