Aaron never joked with Catherine about things like this. If he said it was a promotion, then at least it couldn’t be anything bad. Still, waiting made Catherine restless.
Two days later, she got an email from HR asking her to come in and take care of paperwork for her new position.
That morning, Catherine slipped into a business suit and headed to the office. On her way, she texted Lisa, trying to find out what the new job actually was.
Lisa replied, Dane is handling it personally. My position isn’t even high enough to know the details. I just heard you’re getting a promotion. Guess it’s a blessing in disguise.
Lisa added, I knew that rumor wasn’t your fault. Did Adelina start it again? Maybe Lance feels guilty and wants to make it up to you.
Catherine turned off her phone. Make it up to her? She didn’t even want to imagine what that meant.
Half an hour later, Lorinda pulled her car up in front of SilverLeaf Industries.
“You have thirty minutes. If you’re not out by then, I’m coming in after you.” She set a timer on her phone, sure that half an hour was enough for Catherine to finish everything.
Catherine couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s a company, not a hideout for bandits.”
Lorinda shook her head. “Trust me, this place is scarier than any bandit den. I don’t trust Lance. If he tries something, call me right away and I’ll come rescue you.”
Catherine promised she would and headed upstairs.
The sound of her flats echoed softly over the polished floor, keeping time with her heartbeat.
“Catherine!” The receptionist’s voice rang out, surprised and happy. “You’re back at work?”
Catherine slowed down and nodded. “Just here for my transfer papers.”
