“It’s a secret for now. Just know you’re getting a big promotion this time.”
Aaron was being mysterious, almost teasing.
Honestly, being Lance’s secretary was already the best job anyone at the company could hope for. What kind of promotion could top that?
“What, did he just hand you the company? Make you president of SilverLeaf Industries?” Lorinda burst out laughing. “If that’s the case, we’re set for life.”
Catherine rolled her eyes. “Even if he offered, I wouldn’t dare take it. Besides, why would he give it to me?”
This wasn’t just any company. SilverLeaf Industries belonged to the James family, and half the board was watching every move. Even if Lance owned it himself, he had zero reason to just hand it over.
“Wait… SilverLeaf doesn’t have a general manager, right?” Lorinda suddenly remembered. “You don’t think he wants to make you GM?”
Catherine didn’t even have to think about it. “Sure, there’s no GM, but that’s not happening. All the top jobs at headquarters go to people connected to the board. I’m nowhere near qualified.”
“Ugh, come on,” Lorinda complained. “Can’t you at least try to guess? The suspense is killing me.”
It wasn’t that Catherine didn’t want to know. She just couldn’t figure it out. Lance never did things by the book. If he’d fired her after finding out she was pregnant, she wouldn’t have been surprised. But a promotion…

The office, usually spotless, was thick with smoke.
Aaron knocked on the door. After hearing a flat “Come in,” he stepped inside. He barely made it a few steps before the smoke hit him, making him cough into his hand.
He pulled himself together and hurried over to the window, pushing it open as far as it would go.
“Lance, you’ve got a morning meeting tomorrow. You should get some sleep.” It was part of Aaron’s routine, reminding Lance before heading out for the night.
Lance was sitting on the sofa. His face looked as sharp as ever, but his white shirt was hanging loose. The buttons were undone, sleeves pushed up, and his tie was thrown on the coffee table. The ashtray was overflowing with cigarette butts. Everything in the room screamed that he was having a rough time.
