The curtains in the study were drawn and the lights were off, leaving the room dim.
Victoria had lived in The Imperial Crest Estates for two years and knew every corner of it intimately.
Using her memory of the study's layout, she quickly found the deep blue folder Hawk had mentioned, which contained the documents Elias needed.
It was tucked between two books.
Victoria pulled it out and was about to turn and leave the study.
But the papers inside the folder weren't secured properly and a few fluttered to the floor.
She bent down to pick them up.
Just then, Anne came up with a plate of cut fruit. Seeing the study was dark, she habitually flipped on the lights and called out, "Miss Sanger."
In an instant, the study was brightly lit.
Victoria was standing directly under the light, and the first thing it illuminated were the papers she had just picked up. The black handwriting on them was clearly visible.
That handwriting…
Victoria froze, a string in her mind pulled taut.
She immediately took out her phone, opened her messenger app, and scrolled through her chat history with Cerys.
A moment later, her finger tapped on a photo from over two months ago.
The photo showed a yellow sticky note with a sloppily written sentence: 'The weather's dry, so I made some extra soup.'
Cerys had sent her that photo when she told her the neighbor across the hall had brought soup again.
Victoria suddenly felt her heart start to race, pounding in her chest.
"Anne, turn off the light."
As she spoke, she turned and set her phone's screen brightness to maximum, placing it on the desk.
Anne was confused but did as she was told and switched off the light.
In a flash, the only light in the large study came from the faint glow of Victoria's phone screen.
Victoria's lips were pressed into a tight line. One by one, she placed the papers with the black handwriting on top of the screen.
