Sapphire was certain that once she revealed her identity, she would have all of them fired for this blatant favoritism. The interviewer she'd accosted simply stared at her as if she were an idiot. "Miss, if you continue to disrespect the panel, we will not be considering your application."
Fury flared in Sapphire's chest. What did he mean, not considering her application? She hadn't even submitted one!
"Alright, alright, just sit down," an applicant next to her urged. "She looks like she's just a student. Don't jump to conclusions."
Then someone else recognized her. "You're Sapphire Walsh, aren't you? The one they call Metropia's genius doctor?"
Sapphire instinctively straightened her back, her refined demeanor returning. "I am."
Immediately, another person posed a sharp question. "This hospital used to belong to your family. It was involved in a lot of shady dealings. How did you manage to get out?"
Sapphire's face stiffened for a second before she smoothed her expression. "I wasn't involved in my family's business. My only focus has always been healing patients. The police released me once they found I was innocent."
Her explanation seemed to placate the crowd, and the judgmental stares softened.
"So, what position are you applying for?" someone asked.
Sapphire froze. There was already a director? How was that possible? Gavin had promised her this hospital!
Panic seized her. Ignoring the fact that an interview was in progress, she burst through the door. "Walsh Hospital has a new director? What kind of game are you people playing?!"
As the words left her mouth, she saw her. Across the long table, sitting squarely in the center seat, was Loyce, dressed in simple clothes. The other interviewers were seated on either side of her, and on the placard directly in front of Loyce, the word 'Director' was printed in bold letters.
A roaring filled Sapphire's ears. Her mind refused to process the scene before her, and she stood there, utterly stunned.
