Sapphire Walsh sat among the other job applicants, her tailored business suit, expensive accessories, and flawless makeup making her stand out. She glanced at her watch, then impatiently at the door to the interview room.
She had come by a couple of days ago for what she assumed would be a token 'interview,' only to find the place empty and be told by a staff member that it had been postponed. She had furiously called Gavin, demanding to know why he had rescheduled the interviews without informing her, the hospital's future director. But Gavin had been too busy to deal with her.
Later, Sapphire heard that Gavin's medical equipment had run into some trouble with the military. Assuming that was the cause of the delay, she had suppressed her anger and waited patiently for the official interview day.
After sitting for a while, Sapphire finally saw several interviewers striding down the hall. They walked past her without so much as a glance.
"How can you, the interviewers, be late?" she called out, unable to stop herself. "Don't you know my time is valuable?"
One of the men pushed his glasses up his nose and looked at her, confused. "We sent out a group email last night informing everyone that the interviews were moved to two-thirty."
"What email?" Sapphire pulled out her phone and scrolled through her inbox. "I didn't get anything."
An applicant next to her offered a helpful suggestion. "Did you check your spam folder? All of us got it."
Sapphire's fingers flew across the screen. She found an email from 'Blossom Drugstore' in her junk folder and ignored it. "I didn't receive it. Anyway, can we start? I'd like to go first."
The interviewer frowned at her. "You'll be called in when it's your turn. Please wait for your number."
"Loyce? Are you here for an interview too?" Sapphire's tone was laced with sarcasm. "What strings are you planning to pull this time?"
Her loud accusation drew the attention of the other applicants, their gazes a mixture of curiosity and judgment.
Loyce barely lifted her eyes, her gaze sweeping past Sapphire as if she were invisible. Without breaking her stride, she walked directly toward the interview room.
Seeing her about to enter, Sapphire immediately called out to the interviewer she had spoken to earlier. "Didn't you just say we have to be called in by number? What about her? Are you really going to play favorites so openly? Aren't you afraid of getting fired?"
