Reopening the hospital involved navigating a mountain of red tape. Loyce had never dealt with such complex and tedious procedures before. Fortunately, when her neighbors in the military housing compound heard about her project, they all stepped up, calling in favors and pulling strings for her.
The biggest connection of all came from Heath, who brought in Lucian.
“Loyce is opening a major hospital,” Heath explained to Lucian in his office. “Shapiro, you know her skills better than anyone. When she gets here, help her out. Pull some strings with the higher-ups.”
Lucian sat in Heath’s office, his long fingers tapping lightly on the desk, a thoughtful expression on his face. “Heath, you know I don’t interfere in local affairs.”
Heath wrung his hands anxiously. “But this is different! Loyce is reopening Walsh Hospital! It’s a huge service to the community!”
Lucian looked up, a playful glint in his eyes. “Did she ask me for help personally?”
Heath was at a loss for words. “Loyce is stubborn. I doubt she’d ask.”
Just then, a soft knock came at the door. Loyce stood there, holding a stack of files. She paused when she saw Lucian. “You’re here too.”
Heath stood up quickly. “Loyce, perfect timing! Shapiro was just saying he’d help you…”
“Heath!” Lucian shot him a warning glance before turning his attention to Loyce. “I hear you’re reopening Walsh Hospital.”
Loyce nodded, placing the files on the desk. “Most of the paperwork is done, but the licensing and certification part is…”
Lucian suddenly stood, his tall frame casting a shadow over her. “Why didn’t you come to me directly?”
