Late that night, York returned home to a house plunged in darkness. Every light was off.

He stood there for a moment, disoriented by the unfamiliar sight, before flipping on the lights.

For three years, no matter how late he came home, Claudia would be curled up on the living room sofa, watching TV and waiting for him.

The moment she saw him, she'd run to him barefoot, jump into his arms, and cling to him affectionately, impossible to shake off.

Now, she didn't even leave a light on for him.

It seemed she was truly angry.

He dragged his weary feet to the bedroom, which was also dark. Using the faint light filtering through the curtains, York switched on the bedside lamp.

Claudia had unconsciously buried her face in the pillow.

York sat on the edge of the bed and gently brushed the stray hairs from her forehead, trying to see if she was asleep.

But she kept her face hidden, wrapped tightly in the thin blanket.

York hesitated for a moment, then turned and went into the bathroom.

Listening to the sound of the running water, Claudia slowly opened her eyes.

Her damp eyelashes trembled violently as she pulled the covers over her head again.

York emerged from the bathroom in a dark bathrobe, droplets of water still clinging to his short hair.

He came to the bedside and leaned over to check on her. Seeing that she was still asleep, he turned off the light and went to his study.

The study was dark. York stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, lit a cigarette, and held up the diamond bracelet.

She shouldn't have figured anything out. Otherwise, given her temper, she would've raised holy hell and made it hell for everyone.

The bracelet being on the 13th floor must have been a coincidence.

The next morning, Claudia got ready and was just heading out to get breakfast for her parents when York came out of the walk-in closet, dressed and ready for the day.

Claudia had no desire to speak to him.

She picked up her phone, ready to leave.
