"Claudia," Darleen started, about to get out of the car herself, but Peter stopped her. He then told the driver to keep going, leaving York behind.
Claudia had used her lunch break to make a house call for a friend of her mother's. When she stepped outside, it had suddenly started to rain. She was surprised to see York.
He held the umbrella with one hand and took off his jacket with the other. Claudia shook her head. "It's okay, York. I'm not cold."
He draped the jacket over her shoulders anyway. "Where are you headed? I can give you a ride."
After a moment's thought, Claudia declined. "I can just get a cab back to the hospital. You go on with your business."
York turned, only to find that the car was gone. His gaze fell on her from his towering height. "Have you had lunch?"
Seeing her hesitate, he knew she hadn't eaten. Still, Claudia insisted she didn't want to go to a restaurant with him. York glanced around and pointed to a bubble tea shop with a line. "Come on, I'll buy you a drink."
He remembered how much Claudia loved street food. The bubble tea, grilled skewers, all sorts of snacks—she and Darleen would venture into the most remote places and deepest alleys as long as the food was good.
Claudia nodded, and the two of them joined the back of the line, sharing the umbrella. York switched places with her, positioning himself on the windy side and tilting the umbrella slightly to shield her more. Claudia glanced at him. "What brings you to the west side of the city?"
"I came with Peter," York said, his eyes lowered. "Just a small matter."
Seeing he was reluctant to elaborate, Claudia didn't press him. They hadn't seen each other in days, yet the atmosphere between them felt natural—not overly familiar, but not distant either. The rain was light, and they chatted casually as they waited in line. York looked down, his gaze fixed on Claudia as she talked animatedly.
