As the workday was ending, Gideon was waiting for Claudia by the entrance again. Being approached twice in one day for personal reasons was starting to annoy her. Not wanting to make a scene in front of her colleagues, she reluctantly got into his car. “Gideon, I made myself perfectly clear at lunch. I don’t want to be the subject of office gossip.”

Gideon wasn't a dense man and could sense her impatience. But he hated ambiguity and needed to set things straight. “I’ll only take a few minutes,” he promised. “I won’t keep you long.”

His patience made Claudia soften her own tone slightly.

“Claudia,” he began, “if you’re pushing me away because of Ann, you don’t have to. My parents, our whole family, none of us acknowledge her. We’re already trying to figure out a way to get her out of the Harvest family for good.”

A flicker of confusion crossed Claudia’s face. “How did you know I don’t like Ann?”

“I went to see York,” Gideon admitted honestly.

Claudia looked down, hiding her expression. York wouldn’t have told Gideon the whole truth about their rebirth. Even if he’d mentioned her feud with Ann, he would have been vague. She had expected Gideon to press her on why she disliked Ann, but to her surprise, he didn't ask.

Instead, she reminded him of the hard truth. “Gideon, she is the Harvest family’s adopted daughter. That’s a fact you can’t escape.”

“That’s because you don’t know me well enough yet, Claudia,” he said, his voice firm. “You don’t trust me enough. But I will prove it to you. In my heart, you will always come first.”

Looking at Gideon, Claudia saw a reflection of her past self. His persistent efforts were touching, but they also filled her with a sense of melancholy. Everyone has to run into their own walls, she mused. No one ever listens to the warnings of those who’ve already been bruised. Gideon was a good man, but his timing was terrible. Perhaps in another time, another life, he might have been the perfect person for her.
