A short while later, in Gideon’s office.

“So, what did you want to say?” Gideon asked.

Putting on a pleasant expression, Ann began, “Gideon, have you and Dr. Watkins been fighting lately?”

Gideon’s gaze sharpened. “What makes you say that?”

Ann smiled. “Come on, we’re family now. And Dr. Watkins and I are friends. If there’s anything I can do to help, you just have to ask. I’d be happy to mediate.”

“Ann,” Gideon said, his tone a clear warning, “mind your own business. Don’t overstep. And another thing…” He thought back to the adoption dinner, how Claudia and Ann hadn’t exchanged a single word. If they were truly friends, as Ann claimed, that wouldn’t have happened. The woman was lying.

He paused for effect. “Unless you have a medical emergency, don’t come to the hospital. You can go now.”

His assistant opened the office door and promptly showed Ann out.

Standing in the hallway, Ann glared at the closed door, her heart filled with resentment. She had hoped to get closer to Gideon, to use him as an entry point to solidify her position within the Harvest family. Instead, he hadn't listened to a word she'd said and had warned her off.

And then there was Claudia. Ann had offered her a helping hand, and the woman had shut her down with cold indifference. What was wrong with them? Had she miscalculated? Were they not actually a couple?

Around noon, Gideon caught Claudia again at the hospital entrance. He needed to talk to her, properly this time. After a brief hesitation, Claudia agreed. It was probably for the best to clear the air once and for all.
