Ann hadn't expected Gideon's parents to be so opposed to her.

Feeling exposed and ashamed, she started crying and apologizing. "I'm sorry, Mom, Dad. I was just desperate and misspoke. I didn't mean it."

Gideon's mom’s expression turned stern. "Scheming against Mr. Ferguson wasn't intentional? Having a child with a married man wasn't intentional? Stealing core secrets from the Ferguson Group wasn't intentional? And holding a favor over the Fergusons' heads right in front of us to force their forgiveness wasn't intentional either? Her sharp words left Ann completely speechless.

She shrank back next to her grandmother, sobbing pitifully.

Gideon's mom shot Ann a look of disgust.
