Claudia let go of Gideon.
She turned her back to her parents and squeezed her eyes shut, too scared to look.
Jessica asked her daughter, “Claudia, what’s going on?”
Felix told Eddy to help Gideon up, but Eddy was angry and refused.
Claudia looked down at Gideon.
Seeing his innocent expression, she lied through her teeth. “Mom, Dad, don’t misunderstand. Gideon just threw out his back and lost his balance. Eddy got the wrong idea.”
Seeing the obvious relief on her parents’ faces, Claudia breathed a sigh of relief herself.
Felix stepped forward and, with Claudia, helped Gideon to his feet.
Jessica said, “Hurry and help him downstairs. Let Claudia take a look and see how bad the injury is.”
Eddy, still skeptical, poked Gideon in the lower back. Gideon promptly collapsed onto Claudia’s bed.
Claudia was speechless.
Seeing how serious Gideon's “injury” was, Felix urged Claudia to take him to the hospital for a check-up.
Claudia was also eager to get Gideon out of there. “I’ll take him to the hospital right now for an examination.”
About ten minutes later, they were in Gideon’s car.
Claudia was in the driver's seat, Gideon in the passenger's.
With both hands on the steering wheel, Claudia turned to look at Gideon. “I’ll drop you at the community gate. You can drive yourself home from there.”
Gideon rubbed his back, his expression turning serious. “Dr. Watkins, you kicked me off the bed. I really did throw out my back!”
Claudia was speechless.
Gideon continued, “My eldest brother is a master of therapeutic massage. I’d appreciate it if you could drive me home.”
Claudia stared at him, unable to tell if he was being serious or not.
