Standing at the study door, Claudia's mind went blank, buzzing with a deafening roar.
She staggered backward until her back hit the cold wall, the impact barely enough to keep her upright.
Her body felt weightless. She bent over, gasping for air, but nothing could stop the searing pain in her heart from spreading through her entire body.
He had held it in for so long, and now it had finally erupted. He had finally said what was truly in his heart.
He loved Ann. He wanted to marry Ann.
He hated his grandfather for tearing them apart, hated him for robbing him of his happiness.
From the very beginning, it had all been her one-sided wishful thinking.
Claudia closed her eyes in despair, feeling as if her heart was being ripped to shreds.
Inside the study, Old Mr. Ferguson sat at his desk, with Sewell and the butler flanking him. Across from them stood York.
His hands were clenched into fists at his sides, his eyes were bloodshot, and the veins on his forehead pulsed. His face was terrifyingly dark.
Sewell's expression was no better. "You are the sole heir to the Ferguson family. Your every move affects our future. If she wants to work, she can work at Ferguson Group. Otherwise, she should have a child as soon as possible and be a homemaker. The Ferguson family doesn't support useless people!"
York bit out each word. "Whether she works or whether we have children is a matter between my wife and me. It has nothing to do with you!"
Sewell was about to speak again but was silenced by a gesture from Old Mr. Ferguson.
The old man rose, and the butler quickly moved to support him. He walked around the desk to stand in front of York, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Six years ago, I could make that woman Ann disappear right under your nose. Six years later, I can make her and her child disappear from this world entirely."
"Grandpa, don't push me!" York warned.
