"York," Ann continued, "I know we've caused problems for you and your wife, but I feel so insecure. I'm afraid..."

York stood up and gently patted her back, trying to soothe her. "Don't let your mind wander. Just focus on getting better. I'll handle everything else."

Ann took his hand again. "York, this whole situation started because of me. I can't keep hiding behind you. I want to go and apologize to your wife and to Darleen. Capital City is a small place; we're bound to run into each other. I can't let them go on thinking that about me. I have to clear the air."

York discreetly pulled his hand away. "You're the one who was hurt. They should be apologizing to you."

Claudia had been busy all morning, and the time passed quickly, which was a relief.

At noon, her colleagues went home for their lunch break, leaving her alone in the large staff lounge. She could have gone home too, but she didn't want to make the trip back and forth.

She sat quietly by the window, her lunch untouched in front of her.

When York walked in, she glanced at him once, her face expressionless.

He sat down across from her. The table between them felt like a chasm. His eyes swept over her untouched meal before settling on her delicate face.

She was wearing makeup today. She was beautiful. But he preferred her without it, when she looked so pure he wanted to devour her.

Looking at the unnervingly quiet woman before him, York remembered the scene from last night—her, hysterical with a paring knife, screaming that she wouldn't let him leave.

A complex emotion flickered in his eyes. He stood up and walked around the table to her side.
