York turned the screen off and slid the phone back into his pocket.
The warmth in his eyes vanished with the light of the screen. He said nothing more.
With the driver in the car, Claudia fought to contain the roiling storm of her emotions.
The rest of the drive passed in silence. When they arrived home, he got out and opened her door for her.
Darleen, who had come by to drop something off, was just getting out of her own car.
Seeing Claudia and her brother arrive together, she beamed, assuming they had made up.
But York showed no intention of coming inside. "You two chat," he said to them. "I've got something to take care of, I'll be back later."
As the words left his mouth, the color drained from Claudia's face.
She grabbed the hem of his suit jacket, her voice tight with panic. "Are you going to see her?"
York frowned, prying her fingers from his coat.
"Claudia, don't be like this," he said.
His evasion was an admission.
The emotions she had suppressed all evening finally erupted. She lunged for his phone.
Before her hand could even touch his jacket, he caught her wrist.
York put an arm around her shoulders, guiding her toward the front door. "Don't make a scene. You have work tomorrow."
Claudia struggled, pushing him away. Her hair fell into disarray, and she felt like a shrew. "York, if you walk out that door, I'll kill myself!"
He bent down and swept her into his arms, carrying her through the front door.
He couldn't have her making a scene on the doorstep. If a reporter caught them, the headlines would be a nightmare.
Darleen, stunned by what she had just witnessed, hurried inside after them.
York set Claudia down on the sofa. She immediately scrambled up and threw a cushion at him, completely losing it.
He picked up the cushion from the floor and walked back to her.
He dropped it on the sofa and turned to his sister. "You stay here and watch her."
In other words, no matter what Claudia did, he was leaving tonight.
Hearing his resolve, Claudia felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.
