York's tone was ruthless and cold.
Claudia was left speechless. As she suspected, when a marriage ended, all that remained was calculation and self-interest.
Fighting back tears, Claudia pulled a pen and paper from her purse to write him an IOU. When she spoke again, her voice trembled violently. "Just tell me. How much do I owe you, principal and interest?"
York snatched the pen from her hand. "I paid off your family's debt with real money. An IOU isn't going to cut it."
Claudia was at her breaking point. She never thought York would push her like this. "York, what do you want?" she cried out.
He stood up straight, all business. "If you want a divorce, fine. Out of respect for our three years of marriage, I'll offer you a discount. Let's call it an even billion. Cash only."
Her eyes reddened. "I can't do that right now."
York placed his hands on her shoulders, his voice softening. "Then be a good wife and stop overthinking things."
"I can't do that either!" Claudia shoved him away, losing control.
York released her, his voice turning cruel and heartless again. "Claudia, I'm willing to spend money on the Watkins family to ensure our marriage remains stable. If you can't maintain a stable marriage with me, then they will have to pay it all back. You can't have it both ways."
Claudia stared at the man she had loved for so many years. So, in his eyes, their marriage truly was just a transaction.
