York's expression hardened. "Stop talking nonsense."
Ann's eyes were filled with worry. "York, your wife is so upset with you. If you don't comfort her, she'll never agree to this." She paused before continuing, "And you know what I've been through these past few years… it's a constant source of pain for me. I don't want to be the subject of gossip again."
"York," she said, "maybe this is just my fate. We're from different worlds. Even if I love you enough to die for you, I'll never earn your family's respect. I don't want to be a burden. I'd rather fend for myself than be targeted by your wife."
With that, she got out of the car and ran back into the rain.
York immediately followed, stopping her with a look of pure heartache. "What nonsense are you talking about? As long as I'm here, no one will dare say a word about you. No matter what happens, I will always take care of you."
He pulled Ann back into the car by force.
She struggled, crying. "I'd rather take my son and die than have your wife call me a gold-digger and the other woman!"
York promised her again, "Ann, don't worry. I won't tell her anything about you two, so she'll have nothing to use against you. I promise."
Ann's tears halted abruptly. She looked at him, hope and doubt mixed in her eyes. "But… if you don't tell her, what if she decides to divorce you?"
"Don't worry," York said confidently. "She won't."
She'd make a scene, for sure. But divorce? Unlikely.
A smile finally broke through on Ann's tear-streaked face.
Cleaning her tears, she ignored York's protests and opened the car door.
"Don't worry about me. Go home and comfort her. I'll be fine on my own." With that, she ran off into the rain.
