"Don't worry," York said. "She'll come back on her own."
Wendy was furious. "York, you're just like your father—cold and heartless. The only reason I didn't divorce him was for you and your sister, and I've regretted it for decades."
"But you might not be as lucky as your father," Wendy continued, her voice sharp. "You and Claudia Watkins don't have children. If she doesn't love you, there's nothing holding you together. If you keep being so cold, she'll leave you sooner or later!"
York's tone was unwavering. "Mom, don't be so dramatic. Claudia Watkins won't divorce me."
He remembered her wedding vows perfectly. She had said she would give up her own life before she ever gave up on him.
His sister, Darleen, rolled her eyes in exasperation.
After leaving her son's home, Wendy went directly to the Watkins family residence to bring Claudia back herself.
Jessica and Felix received her politely but refused to let Claudia leave with her.
Darleen clung to Claudia's arm, pleading like a child. "Claudia, I know my brother's an idiot, but you two have been together for so many years. Don't do anything rash. I'll make Mom slap him for you to make you feel better."
Claudia had decided to divorce York and hadn't wanted to involve the Ferguson elders. But since Wendy was here, she had to make things clear.
She gently pulled Darleen to sit down, her voice calm as she addressed Wendy. "Mom, I've already made up my mind. I'm going to divorce York."
Wendy's expression changed instantly at her words.
Darleen shot to her feet. "Look, Claudia, my brother's a total jerk, I get it. But think of all the history you share. Please, don't make a decision like this when you're upset."
A bitter taste filled Claudia's mouth. Yes, it had been many years, but her love had always been one-sided.
"I've thought it through," Claudia said firmly. "You don't need to persuade me anymore."
