Jabco’s jaw clenched. His brows twitched in anger. No one had ever threatened him like that. No one ever dared. His first instinct was to lash out, to shut her down, to remind her who he was.
But before he could say anything, a cab stopped in front of her.
Riyana opened the door and got in without another glance at him.
The car pulled away.
Jabco stood there, watching it disappear down the road, his chest tight with anger he didn’t know how to release.
How dare she threaten him? How dare she speak to him like that? Did she forget who he was?
And yet, beneath all that anger, there was something else.
Helplessness.
He hated that feeling more than anything.
He turned and walked back to his car. Nick snapped out of his thoughts and quickly opened the door for him. Jabco got in without a word. Nick followed, started the engine, and drove off.
The car moved smoothly along the road, but Jabco’s mind was anything but calm.
Without realizing it, he reached into his coat pocket and took out the marriage license. The paper felt strangely heavy in his hand. He stared at it for a long time, his expression unreadable.
Just a few days ago, she had been sitting outside his office, organizing his schedule, handling his meetings, standing quietly by his side for ten years. And now… she was his wife.
His wife.
She would be around him from now on. She wouldn’t leave him again. Not without his permission.
The thought didn’t bring him satisfaction the way he expected. Instead, it stirred something complicated and uncomfortable inside him.
He leaned back in the seat, eyes still fixed on the paper. Why did I do this?
Was it because he depended on her too much? Because she had been there for him for ten years, silently, steadily, filling a space he never noticed until it was empty?
Was it just habit?
Or was it something else?
David’s words from last night echoed in his mind, clear and sharp.
Just tell her if you like her. Otherwise, you’ll lose your chance. Just like me.
At the time, Jabco had brushed it off. He didn’t believe it. He still didn’t want to believe it.
But when he saw her sitting there, smiling, living her life without him, something inside him had cracked. Fear had crept into his heart quietly, the fear of losing control, of losing her completely.
That fear was what pushed him to say those words.
Let’s get married.
He lowered the marriage license slowly, his grip tightening around it.
Did he marry her to keep her close?
Or because, somewhere deep inside, he couldn’t stand the thought of a life where she wasn’t beside him anymore?
The car continued down the road, but Jabco had no answers.
Only one certainty remained.
Nothing would ever be the same again.
When Riyana arrived at the Northstar Media office, Lily was just stepping out of the building.
