Chapter 85 The Rash

Amelia’s lashes fluttered, looking as if she were about to wake up. Benjamin simply scooped the whining Nina into his arms and walked out of the room.
Once outside, Nina’s chubby little hands started flailing. Her eyes stayed shut while she scratched at her own
neck.
Seeing how agitated she was, Benjamin freed one hand to help her scratch.
He lowered his head, but before he even touched her, he noticed red bumps already blooming across her neck.
Benjamin froze.
He set Nina on his lap and checked other areas.
Sure enough, the same red bumps dotted the back of her neck and her little back.
They looked terribly itchy. Nina couldn’t scratch properly, and in no time, she was crying, both frustrated and uncomfortable.
Nina’s crying grew louder, and Benjamin immediately called for a doctor.
While waiting, he paced the hallway with her in his arms, trying to soothe her.
“Hang on a little longer. It’ll be better soon.”
Benjamin kept holding Nina, and his free hand wasn’t idle.
He was searching on his phone for why babies might suddenly get a rash.
The results flooded in. One of them even claimed it could be a symptom of a serious illness.
Benjamin stared at that result blankly and silently decided that this search site was useless.
Nina’s wailing soon woke Amelia up.
Amelia didn’t even bother fixing her messy hair, asking, “What happened? Why is Nina crying?”
She rushed over and took the wriggling, sobbing Nina from Benjamin’s arms.
Even in her mom’s embrace, Nina kept crying nonstop.
“She broke out in a rash.” Benjamin explained quickly, “Her neck, her back, and the front of her chest all have red bumps. Mostly the neck. The doctor is already on the way.”
After he finished, Amelia lowered her head to check Nina herself.
Her brows tightened, and her voice strained. “It looks like an allergic reaction.”
Whatever it was, one thing was obvious-Nina felt terrible.

Still crying, she tried to scratch again.

Amelia held her chubby hand to stop her and said softly, “Sweetie, no scratching. Mommy will wipe it for you. It’ll feel a little less itchy.”
As soon as Amelia spoke, Benjamin went to get Nina’s soft cotton wipes. He even wet them carefully.
Amelia took the wipes and gently dabbed at the rash.
It soothed her a little, but it couldn’t solve the problem.
Nina couldn’t stop crying, “Mommy… Mommy…”
Nina couldn’t explain what she felt. She just kept calling for her mom through her sobs. Her tiny voice was already hoarse.
Amelia held her tight, eyes reddening until tears slipped down.
Amelia whispered softly to comfort her miserable little girl, “It’s okay, sweetheart. Mommy’s here. You’ll feel better soon.
“The doctor is almost here. He’ll take a look, and you’ll be okay.”
One was crying from discomfort; the other from heartache.
Benjamin watched for a moment, his face tightening.
He looked away and instead picked up his phone to ask the doctor how much longer he needed.
Under Benjamin’s repeated urging, the doctor hurried over.
He had already seen the photos Benjamin sent on the way, which clearly showed the red rash.
He already had a suspicion, but to be safe, he checked Nina in person.
The doctor said, “This is hives. The trigger could be a food allergy, an infection, environmental factors, or a reaction to medication. I brought some medicine-use the ointment on the rash, and give her this oral medication.
“For the next few days, dress her in breathable cotton clothes. Make sure she’s not too hot or too cold. Keep bath water under ninety-eight degrees Fahrenheit.
“You don’t need to worry too much. Babies’ skin is very delicate. Issues like this are pretty common. Just keep an eye on her.”
Once the doctor confirmed it wasn’t anything serious, Benjamin finally let out a quiet breath.
He took the ointment and the children’s oral medication, then walked the doctor out.
