Chapter 79 The Mark She Tried to Hide

That was why Sadie could quit a job the second she felt disrespected and go straight back to lying flat at home.
She never swallowed her pride for a paycheck.
Amelia was different. No family, no backing, and a little mouth to feed. She needed the job, needed the
money.
She said, “Sadie, don’t tell Benjamin about what happened on set. He’s Nina’s dad, but he and I… we’re really not close-”
The moment the word “close” left her mouth, the elevator doors in front of them slid open.
Benjamin, who had apparently gotten the news, was standing right there.
Amelia hadn’t expected this at all. She looked up and met his eyes, stunned.
“You… you…” she murmured.
She wanted to ask if he’d heard what she just said, but the words stuck in her throat. Awkwardness flooded her.
Nina, however, felt zero awkwardness. The second she saw Benjamin, her little mouth drooped even more.
She reached out with chubby arms, eyes red and teary, nose all pink; the picture of absolute misery.
“Daddy! Daddy hug!”
Hearing her ask for a hug made something warm bloom in Benjamin’s chest.
No one could resist a soft, squishy Nina. He used to be immune. Now he wasn’t.
He took her from Amelia’s arms, held her close, turned, and walked back into the office.
Amelia hesitated a second, then followed.
Sadie naturally tagged along.
Once inside, Amelia kept her mask on. She only removed the baseball cap.
Standing a polite distance away, she said, “Nina’s bottle is empty. She’s thirsty. Could you get her some water?”
Benjamin nodded and moved to refill the bottle.
But Nina pointed at the glass on his desk, wanting the water that was already there.
Benjamin paused, didn’t give it to her right away.
Amelia hurried to say, “It’s fine, just let her drink from your cup. She’s not picky. She used to put everything in her mouth, even trash off the floor.”

Benjamin asked, “Trash?”

Amelia said calmly, “Yeah. Before she could walk, anything she grabbed went straight into her mouth. Garbage on the ground? Snack time.”
Amelia had lost count of how many headaches that phase gave her.
Benjamin glanced at the trash-eating gremlin in his arms, then at his own glass.
After a long moment, he pressed his lips together and handed it over.
Nina wrapped both tiny hands around the cup and chugged half of it in one go.
When she finished, the big, round tears started welling up again.
“Daddy!” she wailed.
Now it was time to tattle. But Nina’s way of tattling was special.
She suddenly raised one chubby hand and, without warning, smacked Benjamin right across his handsome face.
Benjamin froze.
Amelia instantly panicked and said, “Nina! No hitting!”
Her head spun the moment she saw that little paw fly.
She knew Nina had smacked Benjamin plenty when he was in a coma; he just hadn’t felt it.
But now he was awake. Doing it again was seriously rude!
Amelia was terrified that this would make him dislike Nina.
They’d only had a few days together. If Benjamin ended up not liking her, Nina would be devastated.
“Nina no hit.” Nina’s lips quivered, eyes swimming. “Bad guy hit Mommy. Nina good!”
Her words were all jumbled, but Benjamin, the quickly improving dad, understood perfectly.
She was saying she was a good baby, that she hadn’t hit anyone, and that a bad guy had hit her mom.
Amelia understood, too, of course. But she was still praying Benjamin hadn’t.
She really didn’t want him to know she’d been slapped.
He was Nina’s father, but not her husband, so he didn’t need to get involved.
“Um, Nina’s had her water now. I’ll take her home so she doesn’t disturb your work,” Amelia said, stepping forward quickly and reaching to take Nina from his lap.
