I froze, and the food on my fork fell back into my bowl.
“Why is he in the hospital? Did his fever come back after he left yesterday?” I started blaming myself. I should have insisted he take another dose of medicine this morning.
Gordon's voice cut in.
“He was in a car accident. A car came out of nowhere and slammed right into his. Fortunately, it wasn't going too fast, so Mr. Lancaster's life isn't in danger.”
“Came out of nowhere?” I pressed, a sense of unease creeping over me.
The scenario felt so familiar. There had been too many car accidents lately—Mr. Lancaster Sr., Horace, and even me. The thought put me on high alert.
Gordon's expression grew more serious. “Yes. Mr. Lancaster has already sent people to investigate. It doesn't look like an accident. It'll take some time to find out who was behind it.”
A deliberate crash! The idea sent a chill down my spine. I couldn't believe someone would dare to go after Steven.
At the same time, I noticed a subtle look in Gordon's eyes, as if there was more he wasn't saying.
Just as I was about to ask, Uncle Julian set down his utensils and interrupted us coolly. “I'm going to my study to handle some work. Zephyra, eat up.”
I nodded, my heart a mix of emotions. Though Uncle Julian said he didn't mind, I could feel his internal struggle and his resentment toward Steven.
He shot a cold glance at the gifts Gordon had brought, looking at them with the same displeasure he'd show Steven himself.
Beside me, Tess blurted out, “Mr. Lopez doesn't seem happy.”
Uncle Julian didn't respond, simply leaving the table silently with his cane.
