I lowered my gaze. I honestly couldn't say if we could last a lifetime. But I couldn't deny that my heart was stirring for Steven again.

Seeing me with my head down, silent, Uncle Julian seemed to understand.

“You're grown up now, and you're about to be a mother. There are many things you have to decide for yourself. If you truly want to be with him, I won't stand in your way.”

Before I could speak, he went on, “If he ever makes you unhappy, you tell me, and I'll settle the score with him. If you're happy, be with him. If you're not, you can always come back home. As long as I'm here, you have nothing to worry about.”

Hearing that, my eyes instantly welled with tears. I had expected him to be furious, to scold me for not learning my lesson, but instead, he was just worried I hadn't thought things through.

I went over and hugged his arm, my voice thick with emotion. “Uncle Julian, thank you.”

He has always been so accepting of me, better to me than my own parents were.

Uncle Julian patted my hand comfortingly. “We're family, there's no need for thanks. This afternoon, I'll have a talk with Ryan and tell him to change his attitude toward Steven. That said, even if they're not at each other's throats, he shouldn't be too nice to him either. We don't want Steven thinking he can walk all over you later.”

I looked down. “Actually, I still haven't decided whether to take him back. I'm still torn.”
