When Steven saw me, his eyes lit up, and he immediately stood up.

I instinctively glanced at his legs. He had crossed the room faster than I could have. I was suddenly furious.

I scoffed. “Did you fake an injury just to trick me into coming here? Steven, did you forget the promise you made? It hasn't even been that long, and you're already going back on your word? Do you find this amusing?”

On the way over, I had been so worried about him, imagining all sorts of terrible injuries. I even considered asking Tess to bring him meals every day.

But now, seeing him standing here perfectly fine, all I felt was anger and disappointment.

I felt that if he wanted me to come, he could have just asked. I hate being deceived like this.

I turned to leave, but Steven stepped in front of the door to block my way. “When did I lie to you? I just asked Gordon to drop some things off for you. I don't know what he told you.”

My face was cold. “Are you going to keep pretending?”

Steven's expression turned serious, his brow furrowing as he stared at me. “I'm not lying! You're pregnant and need to rest. Why would I risk upsetting you to get you to come out? If we were going to meet, I would have come to you!”

Hearing him say that, I calmed down a little.

Thinking about it, he was right. Steven was incredibly protective of our baby right now; he wouldn't intentionally scare me.

I suddenly remembered that Gordon had tricked me into coming to the hospital once before on his own initiative.
