Agnes ran as quickly as she could, but it was already too late.
The branch had snapped, and Esther plummeted from the tree.
Agnes froze in shock.
Luckily, Esther fell right into Nocturne and Sprague's arms, nearly bringing all three of them tumbling to the ground.
Thankfully, a soft bed of grass cushioned their fall, and no one was hurt.
But Agnes was beside herself with worry.
She had always thought Nocturne's tree-climbing adventures had brought him out of his shell, seeing it as a positive change.
But she hadn't anticipated the danger.
Agnes rushed over to check on the kids for any injuries.
Then, with a stern tone, she said, "Nocturne, don't you know climbing trees can be very dangerous? Why would you let your sister do such a risky thing?"
Nocturne replied guiltily, "Mom, I'm sorry. I should have been more careful with her."
Sprague quickly intervened, "Agnes, don't blame Nocturne. It was our idea, not his. He actually tried to stop us, but we didn't listen."
Esther chimed in, "Agnes, it was just an accident. It's okay; I climb trees all the time."
Agnes crouched down and said firmly, "Esther, climbing trees is dangerous. You can't do it anymore, understand?"
Esther frowned, clearly unhappy with the directive. At Serenity Hall, she often climbed trees to gaze at the stars or check on bird nests.
If she couldn't climb trees anymore, wouldn't that mean losing a great source of joy?
"I can't promise that, Agnes. I'm really good at climbing," Esther protested.
It was the first time Agnes saw Esther's stubborn side.
But Esther was still young.
No matter how agile she might be, she couldn't possibly judge the strength of every branch.
Esther was still visibly upset.
The three children stayed in the study.
Soon after, Agnes appeared at the door, "Sprague, Esther, come have lunch."
Sprague pleaded, "Let Nocturne come too. He's going to sleep this afternoon, and he sleeps so long, he'll definitely dream of being hungry if he doesn't eat."
Agnes stood firm, "No, as the eldest, he should have looked after you two. Knowing the dangers of tree climbing and still letting you take the risk is a mistake, and mistakes come with consequences."
Esther kept her head down, her fingers tightly clutching the hem of her shirt, wrestling with her feelings.
In the end, Sprague and Esther reluctantly went to the dining room for lunch.
They ate quickly, but these two were little mischief-makers at heart.
They sneakily took a bowl and hid some food in it, likely planning to smuggle it to Nocturne.
