Jewell saw the fear on Jade’s face and realized she had pushed her too far, quickly switching to a soothing tone.
“I’m just guessing, sweetie. Don’t let it get to you. It might just be some bored prankster trying to scare a pretty girl.”
Jade pressed her lips together, but the color refused to return to her cheeks.
“I hope you’re right…”
Deep down, however, she knew it wasn’t a prank.
In that alley, when she was on the ground and he was closing in, she had seen something in his hand-a spray of some kind.
If she hadn’t reacted with that burst of adrenaline, the outcome would have been catastrophic.
Jewell thought for a moment before offering practical advice.
“Go online and buy a high-voltage stun baton and some pepper spray. You need to be able to defend yourself.”
Jade nodded, mentally adding them to her list. “I’ll order them right now.”
Jewell added, “Keep your location sharing on. I’ll be checking my phone constantly. If I see anything weird, I’m calling the cops.”
“Okay.” Jade agreed, feeling the weight in her chest ease slightly at Jewell’s protectiveness.
“Thank
you, Jewell. Truly.”
She had been spiraling in her own fear just moments ago.
But talking to Jewell made the world feel a little less hostile.
“We’re sisters, stop with the formalities.” Jewell looked at her with genuine affection.
“If you’re upset, call me. Don’t sit there and rot in your own head.”
A wave of warmth washed over Jade, and the cloud of anxiety finally began to lift.
“I will.”

Inside the roaring chaos of a high-end bar.
The top-floor VIP suite was pin-drop silent. Hudson Walter’s jacket was tossed aside, and his white shirt was unbuttoned, revealing his collarbone.
His elegant fingers were wrapped around a heavy crystal glass filled with expensive whiskey.
The ice caught the dim light, refracting shards of color across his brooding features.
Hudson’s eyes, usually sharp with cold intelligence, were clouded with a rare, drunken haze.
Across from him, Charles watched him with a look of lazy, amused interest.
“So, it’s been weeks. You still haven’t managed to get Jade to come home?”
Hudson lifted his heavy lids, giving his friend a frigid, warning look.
“She threw away the ring.”
Charles knit his brows. “Didn’t she already do that at the house?”
“This was different.”
Hudson tipped his head back and drained the glass in one go, his throat moving in a sharp, rhythmic swallow.
“I carried that ring with me. I put it on her finger myself. She didn’t just refuse it; she hurled it out of a moving car. She looks at me like I’m a disease. Am I really that repulsive to her? She used to worship me…”
That last sentence was a low, broken whisper.
A whisper filled with a confusion he couldn’t hide.
Charles let out a massive, exaggerated roll of his
cyes.
“What did I tell you? Jade endured everything because she loved you. Now she wants a divorce. She’s retracted that love, so of course all your ‘special privileges’ are gone too.”
“She loved me for years. You’re telling me she can just switch it off like a light?” Hudson didn’t
believe it.
But Jade’s recent actions were making it impossible to deny the reality.

Charles shrugged. “You crossed a line with the Amara situation. You moved your mistress into your marital home and expected your wife to just accept it. You treated her like she didn’t exist. I told you-don’t bully the gentle ones. Even a rabbit will bite if cornered.”
“There is nothing between Amara and me.” Hudson’s brow furrowed into a deep scowl.
“And they’re out of the house now. I’ve explained everything, but she refuses to listen to
