“Hudson, why haven’t you answered any of my calls? Were you just too busy with your grandfather?”

Hudson was about to respond when Emily’s voice cut through the air with a sharp edge.

“Jade had a project in Harbor City these last few days. Hudson flew out there to support her.”

Amara’s smile faltered, her face draining of color. “Hudson was in Harbor City with Jade?”

“Yes.” Emily had been playing nice with Amara for weeks, but it was all a shallow performance.

She had never truly liked the woman, and after seeing the bed photo, her suspicion had turned into a cold resolve.

She would much rather have her son with Jade than with a woman of such questionable character.

At least Jade had integrity, and despite her recent defiance, she was still a known quantity.

Amara’s eyes began to fill with a staged, watery sadness.

“Is that true, Hudson? You were with her?”

Hudson offered a short, indifferent grunt.

“Mm.”

Amara dug her nails into her palms until they broke the skin.

She thought she had successfully driven a wedge between them that could never be repaired.

How were they back on speaking terms?

Where had her plan gone wrong?

Amara opened her mouth to plead for attention, but Emily cut her off with a look of pure

annoyance.

“Amara, Hudson and Jade are a married couple. It’s perfectly natural for him to be by her side. Why do you sound like you’re interrogating him? As I recall, you and my son haven’t been in contact for years. He’s only helping you out of a sense of duty to Ronald. Mind your tone, or people might get the wrong idea.”

The tears that were about to fall from Amara’s eyes were forced back instantly by Emily’s scathing words.

“I’m so sorry, Emily. I understand. My apologies.”

Just then, the ICU door clicked open, and Jade stepped back into the hallway.

Seeing the three of them standing there, she made a conscious effort to keep her distance.

“He’s fallen back asleep. The doctor says he’s stable and should be moved out of the ICU within the week.”

With those words, she turned and headed straight for the elevator bank.

She heard footsteps behind her, and a second later, a hand clamped onto her wrist.

“I’m driving you back.”

“I don’t need a ride.” Jade’s refusal was clear, but Hudson acted as if she hadn’t spoken, physically pulling her into the elevator with him.

At the other end of the corridor.

Amara watched as Hudson chased after Jade and even reached for her hand, her eyes nearly bulging with suppressed rage.

In the past, Hudson would have dropped everything to ensure she got home safely.

But since she had arrived today, he had barely spared her a single word.

Emily watched the transformation on Amara’s face with a cold, knowing silence.

Amara finally realized Emily was still watching her and forced a weak smile.

“Emily, since everything is under control, I’ll head back now.”

Emily didn’t bother to ask her to stay. “Mm. Safe travels.”

Once she was outside, Amara began to re-evaluate every second of the confrontation at the

ICU.

It wasn’t just Hudson; Emily’s attitude had turned glacially cold toward her.

Did Jade tell them something? Did they actually believe her?

She had to eliminate the Jade problem once and for all.

Amara pulled out her phone and dialed a blocked number with shaking fingers.

“I need you to take care of Jade Merchant and that thing in her belly. Right now. My entire plan is at a standstill because of her.”

A man’s voice filtered through the speaker, low and dangerous.

“The Faith family is closing in. You need to wrap this up immediately.”

“I know that!” Amara hissed, sounding like a cornered animal.

“If they find out what we did to Ronald… I’m a dead woman!”

The gravity of the situation was starting to weigh on both of them; the man’s voice lost its usual arrogance.

“Use your leverage with Hudson. It’s the only shield you have left.”

“I knew it!” Amara’s voice rose into a sharp, hysterical shriek.

“You’re washing your hands of me again, aren’t you?”

“I’ll send someone to handle the heavy lifting. Just keep your head down and don’t let Hudson suspect anything.”
