From His Ex-Wife to the World's Most Sought-After Restorer (Jade and Hudson) novel Chapter 93

Chapter 93 The Wall of Silence

“It’s lukewarm, just how you like it.”

Jade took the glass and had a small sip.

“Thank you.”

“Jade,”

Hudson said, taking a seat directly across from her.

“When exactly did we become such total strangers to each other?”

Jade finished half the water before setting the glass down on the bedside table.

“We aren’t strangers. We just never actually got around to being close.”

Hudson’s brows pulled together. “We’ve been married for three years. How can you say that?”

“Yes, we were married for three years…” Jade whispered, a bitter smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“But I’ve realized I never actually knew the man I was living with.”

An unexplainable tightness gripped Hudson’s chest, but before he could respond, Jade spoke again.

“But none of that matters anymore.”

Hudson’s lips moved, ready to argue, but a sharp knock on the door interrupted them.

Emily pushed her way into the room a second later, her face flush with excitement.

“John is awake! Get down there right now!”

Hudson and Jade both stood up immediately and headed for the elevators.

As they stepped out onto the ICU floor, Hudson suddenly clamped a hand around Jade’s wrist.

“Jade.”

Jade tried to pull away, her scowl deepening at his unwanted touch.

Hudson’s grip tightened, his eyes flashing with a desperate intensity.

“When we go in there, do not mention the divorce to Grandpa.”

Jade was stunned that he would even suggest such a thing; the pain in her heart deepened.

“He’s in that bed because of this drama. Do you think I’m insane enough to trigger him again?”

She wrenched her hand free, her eyes turning into shards of ice.

“You love to paint me as a villain, but I have never had a malicious bone in my body.”

Hudson’s pupils contracted with a flash of guilt. “That’s not what I meant.”

“It doesn’t matter what you meant.” Jade turned away from him.

“I’ll do what you asked. I’ll play the part.”

Hudson watched her walk away, a strange, unidentifiable feeling hollow out his stomach.

Lately, it seemed like all he ever saw of her was the back of her head as she moved away from him.

He smoothed his expression and quickened his pace to catch up, walking in a tense silence by her side.

They reached the doors of the Intensive Care Unit.

Emily was already there, speaking with a group of doctors, but she spared Jade a look of pure disdain.

“Only one person is allowed inside at a time. John asked specifically for Jade.”

Jade was surprised for a moment but nodded quickly.

“I understand.”

Emily issued a final, cold warning.

“Don’t say a single word out of line!”

“Mm.”

Jade gave a short, dismissive reply before donning the sterile gear and stepping into the unit.

John Walter lay in the bed, his face obscured by an oxygen mask.

In the short time since she’d last seen him, he had withered, his skin a deathly grey that made her chest ache.

Jade’s eyes burned, and her vision blurred with tears.

“Grandpa…”

John opened his eyes with a visible effort and beckoned her closer with a shaky hand.

She approached the bed and took his hand in hers.

“I’m here, Grandpa John.”

“Jade,” the old man whispered, his voice a mere shadow of what it once was.

“You’re still set on leaving Hudson, aren’t you?”

The confirmation was on the tip of her tongue, ready to pour out.

But seeing his fragile state, she hesitated, terrified that the truth would be the final blow.

John squeezed her hand with surprising strength for someone so ill.

“Jade, I need the truth from you. No more lies.”

Meeting his encouraging, knowing gaze, Jade finally let out a broken sob and nodded.

“I am, Grandpa John… I need to get out…”

The dam broke, and the tears she had been holding back finally flooded over.

She had been carrying this burden alone for so long; she was at her breaking point.

She couldn’t keep doing this-hiding a pregnancy while shackled to a man who didn’t want

her.

It was a suffocating set of chains that followed her everywhere, no matter how far she ran.

The fear that Hudson would find out about the baby was a constant, gnawing terror in her mind.
