Burton let out a soft, amused snort.

“You don’t believe me? That’s fine. She’ll be at the house frequently for the restoration project. You’ll run into her eventually.”

Julian’s expression cleared. “Ah, so she’s the restorer. No wonder you’re so enamored with her.”

Burton had a well-known soft spot for anyone in the restoration arts.

“It has nothing to do with her profession,” Burton said, stroking his chin thoughtfully.

“My judgment is flawless. She’s a girl with a gentle spirit but a core made of pure steel.”

Julian was entirely focused on expanding his empire and had zero interest in romance, but he decided to humor Burton.

“She sounds fascinating, based on your description.”

“She is,” Burton said, tilting his chin with pride.

“Have I ever been wrong about a person’s character?”

Julian chuckled. “I’ll wait until we meet to decide. If our paths don’t cross, then it simply wasn’t meant to be.”

Burton nodded, conceding the point.

“Fair enough. We’ll leave it to fate.”

The following day, Jade finished her preparations and headed to the exhibition venue.

Sitting in the back of the car, she checked her reflection in a compact mirror, feeling a bit out of place with her transformed appearance.

On the advice of the other master restorers, she had applied subtle makeup and donned a pink-and-white bespoke vintage evening gown to match the formality of the event.

Previously, she had always preferred loose, comfortable loungewear.

She rarely wore something this structured and elegant, so the sensation was still a bit foreign.

However, compared to the casual outfits she usually wore, this gown was far more appropriate for the high-society event.

Thirty minutes later, they arrived at the venue entrance.

Jade had just stepped out of the car when a familiar, haunting voice cut through the air.

“Jade.”

Wait-

Was that Hudson?

Jade froze in place, genuinely wondering if she was hallucinating from the lingering fever.

Why on earth would she hear Hudson’s voice here, in the heart of Harbor City?

It wasn’t until he stepped directly into her line of sight that she realized this was a nightmare come to life.

“What are you doing here?”

Hudson’s eyes scanned her from head to toe, his brow pinching at her elegant dress before moving to her makeup, his scowl deepening.

“What do you think? Jade, you had the nerve to send me those legal filings and those photos. My grandfather saw them and was so enraged he collapsed. He’s in a coma right now, fighting for his life, while you’re off playing dress-up in Harbor City with another man. Do you have zero respect for your family?”

John is in a coma?” A flicker of genuine panic and guilt crossed Jade’s features.

“But those documents were for your eyes only. How could he have seen them?”

“I don’t have time for your excuses,” Hudson said, his voice hard as he grabbed her wrist and began dragging her toward his car.

“Regardless, his condition is your fault. You’re coming back with me right now to apologize to him in person.”

Jade allowed him to pull her a few steps before she slammed her feet down and refused to budge.

“No! I am not going back with you!”

Hudson whipped his head around, staring at her with absolute, murderous disbelief.

“He has always treated you like his own flesh and blood. He’s in the ICU and you won’t even go to his bedside?”

“I will see him, but not right now.” Jade looked toward the venue entrance, her eyes rimming with red as she faced the impossible choice.

“I have a professional obligation here that I cannot walk

from.”

Hudson was livid now, his tone dropping to a dangerous, low register.

“My mother was right about you. You are a heartless, cold-blooded b*tch.”

Jade wrenched her arm free with a burst of strength. “If you’re so full of ‘conscience, why aren’t you by his side? Why are you wasting time stalking me?”

Hudson was momentarily speechless, and Jade didn’t let up.

“You said it yourself-he’s unconscious. I’m not a surgeon. What would my presence change? Apologizing to a man in a coma is for your benefit, not his. I know you’ve hired the best doctors. I will offer my apologies once he is awake and can actually hear them.”

“You…”

Hudson was about to lash out again when a venue staff member emerged from the building.

The staffer scanned the area before spotting Jade and approaching with a practiced, professional smile.
