Amara saw the crowd gathering out of the corner of her eye. Her smug expression began to twist, her grip on Hudson’s arm tightening into a claw.

She had wanted to frame Jade and Julian as a scandalous couple to make Hudson despise his wife.

She never expected Jade to flip the script so effortlessly.

With all these eyes on her, how could she speak without making Hudson angry while still hurting Jade?

“Cat got your tongue, Ms. Hoyt?” Julian asked, his voice a cool drawl as he looked between the

two.

“Maybe Mr. Walter should do it then? You three seem so close. You should tell everyone so they can be jealous of your perfect family.”

Hudson ground his teeth, his face darkening to a dangerous shade of gray as he stared at Jade.

We are married!

How could she join forces with an outsider to humiliate him in public like this?

Didn’t she know? He and Amara weren’t what she was making them out to be.

As the silence stretched, the tension became suffocating.

Suddenly, a group of young children ran over, surrounding Hudson and Cortney.

“Cortney! Is this your daddy?”

“My mommy said you didn’t have one, but you always told us he was real and that he was super nice. We thought you were making it up!”

“He’s so handsome! He looks like a model!”

Hudson’s brow furrowed. He was about to issue a denial when Amara tugged on his sleeve and whispered urgently in his ear.

“Hudson, I told you… Cortney is so insecure about Ronald being gone that she’s been afraid to go to school. If you deny it in front of her classmates now, how is she supposed to face them tomorrow?”

Later, after dropping Amara and Cortney home, Hudson fell into a light, exhausted sleep in the back of the car. He was instantly plunged into a nightmare about Jade.

In the dream, Jade was covered in blood, her pale face a mask of helplessness.

“Hudson… save him… save our baby.”

“Please, Hudson. Save my child.”

In a heartbeat, the scene shifted. Jade was holding an urn, staring at him with eyes full of a lethal, cold hatred.

“You pushed me until I broke. You destroyed my mother. I will hate you for the rest of my life!

“The debt of my mother’s remains is one you can never pay. I will make you spend every day of your life in regret!”

Then, the vision changed again. Jade was in a white wedding dress, walking down an aisle toward a man in a black suit whose face was blurred in shadow.

She held a bouquet of white lilies, her smile so radiant and full of joy it hurt to look at.

It was a look she had never, ever given him.

He stood in the corner, a ghost at her feast, watching her kiss another man with a passion that made his blood run cold.

In the dream, Jade turned and looked at him from the altar, her lips curling into a look of pure, biting mockery.
