Chapter 62 The Ego’s Delusion
Charles couldn’t stand the sight and nudged the toe of Hudson’s shoe.
“Quit the dramatic posing. I’m not filming a movie here.”

Hudson shifted his leg slightly in a half-hearted gesture before letting it drop again, looking as if he lacked the strength to even move.
“Jade left.”
“Wait, what?”
Charles’s eyes went even wider than before.
He spoke with a bluntness that cut straight to the bone.
“Didn’t you tell me last time that she’d never leave you? Why is she gone?”
Hudson shot him a lethal glare, his body tensing visibly.
“She doesn’t want to divorce me, but she was genuinely furious this time. She actually went to my grandpa and demanded a split before leaving with her friend. She didn’t come home tonight. No text, no call. That has never happened before.”
Charles moved to his side and leaned against the railing next to him.
“What exactly happened?”
Hudson’s gaze was dark and heavy. “Last night marked exactly one month since Ronald died. Amara was depressed and asked me to have a few drinks with her. We both ended wasted.
up She mistook the master bedroom for her own, put on Jade’s nightgown, and collapsed in bed
next to me.”
Charles stared at him, speechless.
He was so stunned that his usual sharp tongue failed him for a moment.
He looked at Hudson with pure, unadulterated shock.
“You’re telling me… Amara put on Jade’s silk nightgown? And she… slept in your bed? Please tell me Jade didn’t walk in on that.”
Hudson looked away, his lips pressed into a hard line.

“She saw it. She grabbed a pair of scissors and shredded the bedding right there. She held the blades to Amara’s throat and told me she wished she’d die. Then she threatened to kill Amara and then herself if I didn’t sign the divorce papers.”
Charles felt a chill run down his spine, goosebumps breaking out on his arms.
“Man, it sounds like she’s dead serious this time. As far as I can remember, Jade has always been the sweetest person, always smiling. You and Amara pushed her to the edge… I’m worried she’s going to have a total mental breakdown.”
Hudson’s brow furrowed. He didn’t like that interpretation and corrected him sharply.
“We never pushed her. If she could just find a way to coexist with Amara, none of this unnecessary drama would be happening.”
Charles rubbed his chin, asking the question that went straight to the heart of the matter.
“Put yourself in her shoes for once. Could you live under the same roof with a romantic rival?”
“Amara isn’t her rival,” Hudson snapped.
“That’s just what you tell yourself,” Charles said with a shrug.

“The four of us-you, me, Amara, and Ronald-grew up together. Amara is charming, sure, but she’s also incredibly manipulative. Think about it. After Ronald’s accident, she didn’t say a word to me. She secretly contacted you, had you bring her home, and before anyone could blink, she was living in your house. I don’t believe for a second she doesn’t have feelings for you.”
Hudson’s frown deepened. To him, the suggestion was entirely absurd.
“Ronald has only been gone a month. No matter how ‘calculating’ she is, there’s no way she planned this right after his death. She was just a terrified single mother. She thought if she turned to you guys, you’d reject her. So she reached out to me as a last resort.”
Charles arched an eyebrow but decided not to argue that point further.
“Regardless, don’t you think it’s a bit too convenient that Amara ended up in your bed right as Jade walked in?”
“It was a coincidence,” Hudson said firmly, rubbing his temples.
“We were both drunk and just passed out. Nothing happened. I’ve explained that to her a dozen times, but she won’t listen. I have no idea how long she plans to keep up this act.”
