Chapter 61 A Moment of Peace

It had been this way for years, a constant, unchanging rhythm.
Jewell reached over and squeezed her shoulder gently.
“Jade, don’t be afraid. Everything’s going to turn out fine.”
Jade leaned her head on Jewell’s shoulder, her tears slipping down in silence.

“Jewell, I always thought I was the one who forced Hudson to marry me. So during those three years, I never turned down a single request he made. Even if he landed at dawn and wanted a home-cooked meal, I’d crawl out of bed to prepare it. When things got this ugly, I kept wondering if I was the one at fault…
“But after hearing his conversation with John today, I finally realized I never forced him into anything. He married me just to spite Amara for choosing another man and leaving the country. For three years, he took my kindness for granted while offering nothing in return. Now that the woman he loves is back, he treats me like garbage. I… I don’t owe him a thing.”
“He’s absolutely blind!”
Jewell cursed under her breath with pure venom.
“He has no idea what a prize he’s losing. He’s going to regret this for the rest of his life!”
“Let’s stop talking about him.”
Jade reached up and aggressively wiped her tears away.
“Later, I’ll head over to the small apartment my mother left me and get it ready. I’ll wait until Hudson is at the office to go back and pack my things.”
She had no desire-and frankly, no courage-to face Hudson head-on right now.
Currently, Hudson was acting like an unpredictable, dangerous lunatic.
If she couldn’t win a fight with him, she could at least disappear from his sight.
“Don’t rush into it,” Jewell said, steadying her and looking at her with bright, hopeful eyes.
“We haven’t had a real chance to sit down and talk in forever. My studio isn’t busy right now. Crash at my place for a couple of days, and then I’ll help you pack.”

The genuine excitement in Jewell’s eyes began to wash away the gloom in Jade’s chest. A real smile curved her lips, her almond eyes crinkling.
I remember you’ve been craving a tabletop BBQ. Let’s go get some right now.”
When Jade smiled, her entire face seemed to light up, becoming so radiant it was hard to look
away.
Jewell scooted closer, tilting her head to rest against Jade’s shoulder.
“But you’re pregnant. Is a BBQ grill okay for the baby?”
Jade reached back and squeezed Jewell’s hand.
“Of course. We’ll just order the mild and spicy combo.”
“I totally forgot, Jewell said, wrapping an arm around her as they headed out, warm and close.
“Let’s go. It’s still early. After we eat, we can walk around the neighborhood.”
Jade and Jewell arrived at the BBQ joint.
It wasn’t crowded, and the staff quickly began setting out their various meats and side dishes.
Jewell seared a prime slice of beef and placed it in Jade’s plate.
“This cut is incredibly tender. The texture is perfect. Try it.”
“Min
Jade dipped the meat into a mild sauce and took a bite.
The silky, savory flavor was so good that her eyes narrowed in pure bliss.
It’s delicious!”
Jewell didn’t stop, placing another perfectly grilled slice into Jade’s plate.
“If
you
like it, eat up. You’ve gotten way too thin lately.”
“I will!”

Jade grilled a piece of tripe and placed it in Jewell’s plate.
“Don’t just focus on me. You need to eat too.”
“I’m on it.”

An hour later, they finished their meal and strolled side by side along a river, each holding a fruit smoothie to aid digestion.
The river was crystal clear, reflecting the city lights and the stars in a shimmering, rhythmic dance. A cool breeze brushed against Jade’s face, blowing away her lingering frustration and bringing a sense of peace.
She lowered her lashes, simply soaking in the tranquility of the moment.
In the three years she’d been married to Hudson, she’d rarely felt this relaxed.
The title of Mrs. Walter looked glamorous to outsiders, but the bitterness and isolation were
hers alone to bear.
Hudson was rarely home, leaving her to manage both their villa and the family estate by herself.
Emily was obsessed with molding her into a daughter-in-law who was perfectly poised for every high-society event.
She’d been forced to learn floral design, wine tasting, and jewelry appraisal…
If she slipped up even slightly, Emily would lash out with barbed insults and backhanded
comments.
She was exhausted, and there were many times she wanted to just walk away from it all.
But every time she thought of Hudson, she’d swallowed her pride and endured it.
Looking back, a world that didn’t belong to her was never going to fit, no matter how hard she tried.
This life suited her much better-grabbing a casual meal with a best friend and clearing her
head.
It was simple and quiet, but she was infinitely happier than she’d ever been as a Walter.

The rooftop of the Walter Group.

Hudson stood by the railing, a lit cigarette held between his long, elegant fingers.
His sleeves were rolled up, revealing the powerful, corded muscles of his forearms.
His hair, usually perfectly styled, now fell messily over his brow, giving him a look of profound, hidden desolation.
“Cough, cough-”
Charles’ voice drifted over from behind, accompanied by a string of curses.
“D*mn, why does it reek of smoke up here?”

He approached and saw the floor littered with cigarette butts. He stared at Hudson with wide, shocked eyes.
“Are you trying to kill yourself? Do you even want your lungs anymore?”
Hudson exhaled a slow plume of smoke and crushed the butt under his heel. He leaned back against the railing, his long legs crossed in a relaxed but tense posture.
