Chapter 44 The Unwanted Houseguest
The next second, her limp body was scooped up and steadied on its feet
Hudson half-embraced Jade, staring at her deathly pale face with tightly knit brows.

“When did your health get this bad? It’s a good thing Emily is bringing a doctor over tomorrow. I’ll have him give you a thorough checkup and prescribe some medication to nurse you back to health.”
Catching her breath, Jade shoved Hudson away and looked him dead in the eye.
“There’s nothing wrong with my health. It’s just that the second you get near me, I’m constantly reminded of how sweet and utterly devoted you are to Amara. I can’t take it anymore, Hudson. You can pretend nothing happened and string along two women, but I can’t. If you have needs, go to Amara to satisfy them. I—”
“Jade!”
Hudson cut her off with an icy glare.
“How many times do I have to explain things about me and Amara before you believe me? And fine, throw your tantrums at me, but Amara and Cortney live in this house too. If she hears you saying these things, what do you think she’ll feel? How do you think Cortney will feel?”
Jade’s lips curled up slightly, her eyes brimming with bitter sorrow.
“Didn’t you explicitly tell her daughter to treat you like a father the moment Amara moved in? And now you’re worried they’ll overthink things? Please. You aren’t afraid they’ll think too much-you’re afraid they won’t think enough to realize how deeply devoted you are to them.”
Hudson froze, never expecting that Jade had overheard his conversation with Cortney that day.
“Cortney had just lost her father, and she was terrified the other kids at preschool would bully her for it. I only said that to calm her down.”
Just to calm her down, so you gave away our own child’s nursery to be her princess bedroom?”
in their three years of marriage, Jade never knew Hudson could spin excuses so effortlessly. Finding it utterly ridiculous, she steadied her voice and looked at him seriously.
“Hudson, you said you married me because I was sensible and low-maintenance. But with things spiraling like this, I absolutely refuse to be your convenient wife anymore. Divorce is the best outcome for both of us. Just sign the damn divorce papers already. There is zero point in dragging this marriage out any longer.”
Seeing that Jade was completely serious, Hudson furrowed his brows, his tone turning freezing cold.
“That is entirely your one-sided opinion.”
Jade was about to argue back when a soft voice suddenly drifted over.
“Hudson? Jade? It’s so late. Why are you two still up?”
Jade looked over. Amara, dressed in a red silk nightgown, stood at the top of the stairs like a lingering ghost that simply refused to disappear.

Suddenly feeling deeply uncomfortable, Jade rubbed her chilled arms, only to see Hudson immediately walking toward Amara.
“Why are you dressed so lightly? The temperature dropped recently. Don’t catch a cold.”
Amara offered a gentle smile.
“I was just a little thirsty and came down for some water. I’ll head back to my room right away”
Hudson smoothly walked over to the kitchen island and poured a fresh glass of water for Amara.
“Drink up and go back to bed.”
Amara took the glass, tilting her head with a sweet, tender smile.
“Thank you.”
Standing at the bathroom door, Jade watched the impossibly harmonious bubble between the two of them-a bubble that completely shut everyone else out. She couldn’t help but recall a memory from the Merchant household years ago.
It had been Robert’s birthday. Michael had ordered his assistant to buy a cake first thing in the morning. Then, in an incredibly rare move, he left work early, bringing the cake home to celebrate Robert’s special day. Cindy had even prepared a massive feast of all of Robert’s favorite dishes.
They happily sang “Happy Birthday,” the dining table filled with laughter and joy. It was the kind of genuine warmth and happiness that only a real family possessed.
Back then, Jade had stood right behind the door, feeling like an intruding outsider secretly spying on someone else’s happiness.
Just like right now. Watching Hudson and Amara standing together gave her that exact same suffocating feeling.
People always said that the truly unloved person in a relationship was the actual third wheel. Jade used to not understand that saying, but at this exact moment, she understood it perfectly.
Even with the official, legitimate title, when a person simply wasn’t loved, their status as a “wife” was completely and utterly
